Before the summer break began, we couldn’t leave you without any useful tips for drinking sensibly and effectively even when the climate is hot and muggy.

In fact, it is important to choose the right wines (also take a look at our article dedicated to the Wines of Summer).

This is the reason why, during the “Wines on the Crest of the Wave” tasting session, we selected five wines to sip in the summer, ideal for accompanying barbecues with friends, cocktails on the beach or lunches on the balcony.

And then, the location we chose for the event couldn’t have been more fitting: the splendid garden of Surfer’s Den, the Milanese surfers’ club, because tasting wines in the summer has a completely different taste!

HERE’S WHAT WE TASTED

Cordon Rouge, Maison G.H. Mumm, #Playful character

We began the tasting session with a welcome bubbly that is as soft and silky as only Champagnes know how to be.

Millesimé 2012, Maison G.H. Mumm, #Brilliant character

If the Cordon Rouge had prepared our palates for the tasting, the Millesimé took us to seventh heaven. A super elegant Champagne, with a fine perlage and a vibrant acidity that makes it fresh and dynamic to drink. We classed it as having a #Brilliant character!

Why did we choose it?

A bottle of sparkling wine in summer is a must and if it’s a Classic method, better still! This type of production envisages the wine re-fermenting in the bottle, enabling it to reach the optimum internal pressure for a sabrage!

Pinot Grigio 2018, Zio Baffa, #Outgoing character

Could we ever leave a wine produced by a surfer out of an evening dedicated to summer wines? Of course not!

A Pinot Grigio that makes you feel its territory of origin with the alcoholic warmth it releases. It is made in Sicily, where the sun and the high temperatures bring the grapes to just the right level of ripeness, making them sweet and fragrant. The finish leaves in the mouth, in any case, a fresh, sapid sensation, so we decided to class it, without any shadow of a doubt, as #Outgoing.

Why did we choose it?

The Pinot Grigio of Zio Baffa is the ideal white to open on the beach for an apéritif at sunset. In fact, it has an ingenious cork, that allows you to open the bottle even if you don’t have a corkscrew near to hand.

1918 Riesling, 2018, Ottavio Dezza, #Outgoing character

A Rhine Riesling (and so originally from Germany) from the Oltrepò area is that bold, bizarre choice that does not disappoint.

A white with a delicate aroma that places all its bets on taste: a sinewy, degreasing acidity and a significant body make it the perfect wine to accompany a tasty dish of fried fish. Its character?? #Outgoing!

Why did we choose it?

We chose it because in summer a fresh but more structured wine is ideal for accompanying a dinner opposite the sea.

La Cona, Negroamaro 2017, Cantina Serìo, #Sensual character

A powerful red with a tannin that is silky and anything but astringent. Warm, soft and sapid, it struck us for its kaleidoscopic aroma: each time we nosed it we would pick up a different hue, from ripe red fruit to the balsamic tones of eucalyptus and rhubarb.

Why did we choose it?

We wanted to sum up summer in a wine glass and the first region that came to mind was Salento! A magical place where we would all love to live, at least from June onward, and this is possible…through a bottle. A wine that proves the perfect accompaniment for a meat barbecue in the company of friends!
