We could call it a \u201cpatriotic\u201d varietal, emblematic of an oenological parochialism (in a positive sense, of course) which has perhaps been a bit lost. It\u2019s the vigorous, rustic, and strong <\/span><b>Timorasso<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a varietal that creates a full-bodied wine with a delicate fragrance, almost as though it reflects the people of this region.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A BIT OF HISTORY<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cultivation of Timorasso gets lost in the <\/span><b>labyrinth of history<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It has been present in the province of Alessandria since ancient times, but the first written records date back to the famous <\/span><b>agricultural treatise by Pietro de\u2019 Crescenzi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (14th century). The <\/span><b>Di Rovasenda family\u2019s Ampelographic Bulletin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1885) confirms that it was the most widely cultivated varietal in the area around Tortona,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in particular in three valleys: from east to west, <\/span><b>Curone Valley, Grue Valley, and Ossona Valley.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time it\u2019s presence also extended into the Borbera Valley, the Novese territory, and the Oltrep\u00f2 Pavese.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was also for this reason that it became the most important white varietal in Piedmont, in terms of both its extent and the amount produced. <\/span><b>The State Archives of Turin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help us to partially reconstruct its heyday through mention of the elusive \u201cTorbolino\u201d, which dealers, between the two wars, sold primarily in Northern Europe; a young and semi-processed product that was none other than the \u201cunripe\u201d Timorasso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After WWII, its popularity <\/span><b>declined<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the exodus from the countryside and difficulty in adapting the varietal to areas other than those around Tortona caused it to nearly disappear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until the 1990s, that is, when it was relaunched by a group of knowledgeable winemakers led by <\/span><b>Walter Massa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who triggered its comeback. In the wake of this rediscovery, we met one of the partners of the <\/span><b><i>Vinhood Community<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canevarovini.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luca Canevaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has turned Timorasso into his own coat of arms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>LUCA CANEVARO<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luca began his entrepreneurial adventure in <\/span><b>2016<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from an offshoot of the family company. Right away he proved to have very clear ideas. He began focusing on relaunching products that were closely connected to the region, became very interested in <\/span><b>organic agriculture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (at the moment the company, led by Luca, has approximately 8 hectares of fully certified organically farmed vineyards), and immediately joined <\/span><b>FIVI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Italian federation of independent winemakers, believing strongly in this project which brings together all of the small winemakers in Italy who are focused on the production of traditional, authentic, and original wines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approaching Timorasso was, therefore, a natural progression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As was working strenuously to relaunch it as a wine with unique and distinct <\/span><b>territorial<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> characteristics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rediscovery of this ancient varietal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, explains Luca, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undoubtedly led to the rediscovery of all of its rich attributes: a region to explore, visit, and taste, where the many culinary products, like the Salame Nobile of Giarolo, the peach of Volpedo, the white truffle of San Sebastiano, the cheese of Montebore, the \u201cBella\u201d cherry of Garbagna, the scented strawberry and \u201cpane grosso\u201d of Tortona &#8230; are happily paired with local wines<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-9726\" WINE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wine made from Timorasso grapes is generally a well-structured and <\/span><b>full-bodied white<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with an intense straw-like color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its fragrance (fruity and floral) is <\/span><b>very delicate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a wine that ages well. \u201cYoung\u201d it\u2019s an excellent aperitif to serve with appetizers and cured meats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it has aged, it pairs well with truffle-based pasta dishes, fresh cheeses, white meats, and fish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
