Since the end of the 19th century, Fernet has become so deeply ingrained in Argentina\u2019s culture that the Albicelestes think of it as Argentinian, even <\/span><b>a symbol of the country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>DOCTOR VERNET\u2019S ELIXIR OF LONG LIFE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Fernet was first created in Italy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at the end of the 18th century, as an elixir of long life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was invented by a so-called (and nonexistent) Swedish doctor, <\/span><b>Dr. Vernet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who passed away at the venerable age of 104 when he purportedly fell off of a horse!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, the prodigious miracles of long ago inventions!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it is thanks to this medicinal liqueur which he lavished upon his family daily, that his grandfather supposedly died at 130 years old, his father at 110, and his mother at \u201conly\u201d 107.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 19th century Fernet became the primary <\/span><b>Italian remedy for sterilizing water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a disinfectant that was ahead of its time, in a country that was severely afflicted by cholera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-7688\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><b>FROM MEDICINAL LIQUEUR TO DIGESTIF<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two main companies compete for the benchmark, both based in Milan: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fernetbranca.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fratelli Branca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Porta Nuova, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camparigroup.com\/it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaspare Campari<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Galleria Vittorio Veneto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former is the winner, having rediscovered the eternal Vernet, this time with an honorary degree in chemistry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An elusive Scandinavian volunteer, who came down to Italy to fight in the Five Days of Milan (really?!), gave the recipe for the liqueur which he had invented as payment for the hospitality that he received in the Branca home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1893 the <\/span><b>University of Pavia declared Fernet to be medicinally ineffective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However by then the die had been cast, and this Ambrosian liqueur remained a solid fixture of our customs and consumption, simply repositioning itself as a <\/span><b>digestif<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, without major uproar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-7676\" \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE DIGESTIF OF MIGRANTS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Argentina has approximately 45 million inhabitants, of which at least 25 million are of Italian descent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An astonishing number that approaches 56% of the population, making it the <\/span><b>largest ethnic group in the country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The huge migratory influx that straddled the past two centuries led almost <\/span><b>three million Italians <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to set sail for Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires, armed with cardboard suitcases full of hopes, dreams, and the essential (for the times) Fernet Branca.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the more essential considering the social and cultural background of our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanos <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(from Napolitanos), as our fellow countrymen were then called, who believed more firmly in their grandmothers\u2019 remedies and in superstition, than in actual scientific truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brancainternational.com\/il-gruppo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fratelli Branca International<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an incredibly global company for the times, with production facilities in France, Switzerland, and the United States, sensed an excellent business opportunity and, in 1926 <\/span><b>opened a branch in Argentina<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Tortuguitas. Today this location represents <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.branca.com.ar\/productos\/nuestras-marcas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the group\u2019s largest production hub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and pulls in more than 40% of the brand\u2019s total revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No man is a prophet in his own land<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the consumption of Fernet in Argentina is the highest in the world with <\/span><b>25 million liters per year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, three times more than in Italy itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-7678\" OF ARGENTINA<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1970s, long before bitters were introduced to mixology in Italy, Oscar \u201cEl Negro\u201d Becerra, bartender and owner of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/restaurantguru.com\/Premier-Cruz-del-Eje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premier a Ciudad de Cruz del Eje<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, simply combined cola, ice cubes and Fernet to create a drink that was considered the <\/span><b>Cuba libre of Argentina:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Fernandito.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was an overwhelming success, spreading from the C\u00f3rdoba province, through the capital, and ultimately inundating the entire country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also amicably known as Fermao or Fef\u00e8, it\u2019s the <\/span><b>most popular and most frequently consumed cocktail <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Argentina, so much so that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iba-world.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I.B.A. (the International Bartenders Association)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> added it to its list of official cocktails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While today Fernet is, unfortunately, seen as dated in Italy, positioned like an industrial product on the shelves of large scale distribution outlets and severely lacking in hype, in the Tierra del Fuego it is unaffected by social class, trends, or status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fernet and Fernandito cut through all of that and are found, without distinction, from the most elegant Michelin-starred restaurant all the way to the smallest <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chiringuito <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in working-class neighborhoods<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(one particular spot stands out: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.laferneteria.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Ferneteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, where this Milanese digestif is added to even the most modern cocktails invented here).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-7682\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Argentina time seems to have stood still for Fernet Branca, similar to those Italian immigrants who eternally listen to Toto Cutugno\u2019s \u201cL\u2019Italiano\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s in excellent company, alongside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.camparigroup.com\/it\/spiritheque\/cynar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cynar<\/b><\/a><b>, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinzano.com\/it\/it\/aperitivi\/classici\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cinzano,<\/b><\/a><b> and Vermouth <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(in addition to local imitations like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regionalesbeney.com\/fernet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fernet Beney<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), here ever present, which have transformed from elixirs of long life to elixirs of eternal youth&#8230; at least for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paraphrasing the words of Mexican author <\/span><b>Octavio Irineo Paz Lozano<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, considered equal to Pablo Neruda and Jorge Louis Borges, the father of 20th century Hispanic literature: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Argentinians are Italians that speak Spanish <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(and, I might add, drink Fernet) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and believe
