Today we present beer and yoga.<\/span><\/p>\n

No, we haven\u2019t been drinking… it\u2019s simply the <\/span>new frontier of this discipline <\/b>which helps us to nurture wellness in our body, mind, and spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I know, upon first impression this pairing seems so implausible that Robert Maynard Pirsig\u2019s <\/span>Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance<\/span><\/i><\/a> sounds almost normal, or even trite.<\/span><\/p>\n

BEER-YOGA, FROM MERE FUN TO A TRUE DISCIPLINE<\/b><\/h2>\n

First created just for fun during the 2013 edition of <\/span>Burning Man<\/span><\/a>, an alternative festival that takes place every year in the vast expanse of desert in Black Rock City (90 miles from Reno), Nevada, it <\/span>became an official discipline in 2015<\/b>, when Brooke Larson and Emily Casey, two enthusiastic participants at the time, autonomously opened <\/span>the first two schools in the world<\/b>: respectively <\/span>Beer-Yoga<\/span><\/a>, in Oklahoma City; and <\/span>Bier-Yoga<\/span><\/a>, in Berlin.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, this brew-based meditative practice is recruiting <\/span>proselytes all over the world<\/b>, with classes in <\/span>Australia<\/span>, <\/span>Mexico<\/span>, <\/span>Colombia<\/span>, <\/span>Venezuela<\/span>, <\/span>Argentina<\/span>, Brazil, Great Britain, <\/span>France, Hungary, Finland, South Africa, Cambodia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and even appearing in Italy, in Rimini.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These sessions don\u2019t only take place in gyms or out in the open, but often <\/span>in breweries, pubs, and taprooms<\/b>, bringing together two great passions for many of us.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The more purist yogis and yoginis among us will look at this new trend with ill-concealed diffidence, forgetting that at the very roots of this ancient Indian discipline, as far back as the 6th century, <\/span>alcohol was used as an ascetic and meditative aid<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A sort of conservative return to its origins, in full \u201cCircle of Life\u201d style, but without calling upon Simba and Walt.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT IS IT EXACTLY?<\/b><\/h2>\n

In truth, not much changes.\u00a0 The <\/span>asanas<\/span><\/i>, the positions of the body in yoga, are the traditional ones, enhanced by the aid (or obstacle) of a good beer.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s right, because while <\/span>sipping is allowed<\/b> in moderation during the exercises, the beer can also be used as a means for achieving greater awareness and concentration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You try doing <\/span>Vrksasana<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>tree pose<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>while balancing a beer on your head<\/b>, or <\/span>Virabhadrasana<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>warrior pose<\/span><\/a>, while firmly holding a pint in your hand (and above all without taking a swig)… then we can talk.<\/span><\/p>\n

All we\u2019re saying is that it\u2019s fun, but it\u2019s no joke!<\/span><\/p>\n

CASUAL YOGA<\/b><\/h2>\n

Those who practice it love it, because it\u2019s perfect for relieving stress.<\/span><\/p>\n

Less strict and more fun than traditional Yoga<\/b>, more like a get-together with friends, it\u2019s perfect for those who, after work, can\u2019t decide between going out for a beer and getting some healthy exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those who teach it emphasize that <\/span>anyone can do it<\/b>, from expectant mothers (just get a non-alcoholic beer) to those who have never tried yoga before to those who simply want to spend an evening out with other people.<\/span><\/p>\n

With less than 20% of those who practice yoga in Italy being male, could beer finally help to dispel the typically macho prejudices directed towards this discipline?<\/span><\/p>\n
