According to a study conducted by the <\/span><b>Vinitaly-Nomisma Wine Monitor Observatory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, only one winery in ten saw an increase in its revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This slump was a direct result of the drop registered by <\/span><b>Ho.Re.Ca <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">channels (-91%), <\/span><b>specialized retail <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(-75%), <\/span><b>exports <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(-63%), and <\/span><b>direct sales in wineries <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(-87%). In terms of commercial channels, <\/span><b>large-scale distribution <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provided a partial counterbalance with +51%, while <\/span><b>online sales <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been increasing for 80% of producers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Regardless, throughout it all, the sector demonstrated its responsiveness and its desire to get past the emergency created by this pandemic. Let\u2019s take a look at what the current trends of 2021 are!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>SUSTAINABILITY AND ZERO-IMPACT<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raise your hand if, over the past year, you\u2019ve heard at least one person talk about \u201csustainability\u201d as it pertains to the wine industry. But when is it that a wine is considered <\/span><b>truly sustainable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? When its production respects the environment, thus minimizing its impact on the region, and, at the same time, pays attention to the working conditions of its employees and to their social rights, thus guaranteeing financial solidity to the company in its entirety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More and more consumers are looking for brands that are \u201ccommitted to\u201d and respect the environment (<\/span><b>7 out of 10<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clients are ready to reward products from sustainable companies, even paying more for them \u2013 source <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Findomestic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, wineries that offer <\/span><b>organic and biodynamic wines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the production of which uses little or no chemical synthesis) are popping up all over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>QUALITY, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wineintelligence.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Wine Intelligence<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a world leader in the research and analysis of wine trends, states that the losses in sales volume are (and will be) increasingly balanced by a higher <\/span><b>price <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">point for each individual bottle. Basically, drinking less wine, but better wine!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entry on the market of as yet unsold stockpiles will also tend to compensate for the increase in prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>IT\u2019S RAINING PROSECCO\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The race was neck and neck for quite some time, but now Prosecco\u2019s transalpine cousin, Champagne, has been left in the dust<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaving <\/span><b>Prosecco<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to become the best-selling wine in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prosecco has many strong points: a competitive price, it goes down easy, and its quality is on average very high. That\u2019s why it\u2019s unlikely that this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Made in Italy <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product will give way to a runner up. It\u2019s methods of purchase and consumption changed rapidly, as did the ways in which consumers find information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Italy in 2020 <\/span><b>e-commerce <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was worth between <\/span><b>\u20ac150-\u20ac200 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo get a general idea, just think that in 2009 online sales worldwide represented 1% of all off-trade sales of wine while in 2019 they reached 7%, an absolute value of almost 2 billion bottles,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated Emanuele Di Faustino, Project Manager for Nomisma. And in 2020, the percentage is expected to have reached 10-12%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the pandemic, Italy was quite far behind the other primary international markets: e-commerce accounted for <\/span><b>only 1% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of retail sales, as compared to 4% in the USA, 10% in the UK, and a whopping 29% in China. With the lockdown, over 8 million consumers of red wine in Italy placed their trust in various e-commerce services, from those that already existed to those that little by little sprang up during these months. We\u2019re talking about <\/span><b>27%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all wine drinkers, a figure that\u2019s even more remarkable when compared with the 17% from 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE FUTURE IS PHYGITAL\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s undeniable that use of the digital medium has increased exponentially over these months, but what will happen when everything goes back to normal?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future will be \u201chybrid\u201d, with the key word being <\/span><b>phygital<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: client experiences will be made up of a combination of physical and digital components. Brands will have to work to integrate virtual process in their <\/span><b>physical spaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to ensure that those who prefer to interact from a distance have a way to do so.
