Walk right side, safe. Walk left side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later&#8230; get squish just like grape.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, karate same thing. Either you karate do \u2018yes\u2019, or karate do \u2018no\u2019. You karate do \u2018guess so\u2019, squish just like grape.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And with that, I will now unveil my 10 tips for becoming a black belt in wine tasting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spoiler alert: some of these methods are also used to help people recover their sense of smell after losing it due to Covid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>1) Know what the aromas in a wine can be<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may seem trivial, but the first step in understanding what aromas there might be in a glass of wine is to know, more or less, what to look for and what to expect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing to know is that there are essentially three categories of aromas in a wine:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary or varietal aromas, those derived from the grape and which are specific to the varietal;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secondary aromas, caused by fermentation, those derived from the vinification process in a wine cellar thanks to yeasts and bacteria;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tertiary aromas, those that develop as a wine ages, both during its time in the wood barrel and its time in the bottle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This classification, which provides certain indications regarding the origin of the aromas, is then followed by a classification according to scents, for example floral, fruity, vegetal, spicy, woody, or toasted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the macro-category has been identified, however, how does one get even more specific? Meaning, when does one reach the point of saying: \u201cThis Chardonnay recalls the smell of ripe hay in summer\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creativity aside, it\u2019s extremely helpful to have an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aroma wheel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> handy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter wp-image-7650 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/karate_ruota_aromi_INNER.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here aromas are first described according to their family and, little by little as it progresses outward, one then finds more specific descriptions of the scents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t very many aroma wheels on the market and all of them more or less resemble one another. I recommend this one by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aromaster.com\/it\/product\/ruota-degli-aromi-del-vino\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aroma Master.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2) Smell spices and fruit to become familiar with their scents!<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Mr. Miyagi taught Daniel, it is from the most mundane gestures that we can learn the best lessons, to be pulled out in our moment of need as though possessed by a little <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">karateka <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who lives within us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, my dear students, what I am suggesting might seem a bit bizarre, but trust me because the results are guaranteed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open the kitchen cabinets where you keep the spices, go to a florist, buy out the green grocer, and start sniffing everything within arm\u2019s reach like bloodhounds, looking for scents!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeatedly smell individual spices and try to memorize them. Do the same with other smells, perhaps allowing yourself to be inspired by the scents on the aroma wheel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll see that after a bit of training, aromas will pop into your mind like magic when you smell a wine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This technique is the same used as part of the treatment protocol after losing one\u2019s sense of smell due to Covid. This is a smell that can be found in spoiled wine that has been attacked by an undesired yeast, the nauseating Brettanomyces Cerevisiae, or Brett for short.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A solution &#8211; though not a cheap one &#8211; is to have access to an aroma kit with pure essences that help us to learn what oak smells like, or mouse pee[1]\u00a0 (for those wondering, another \u201cgift\u201d from our dear friend Brett, mentioned above).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recommend two, one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tasterplace.com\/collections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smaller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the other more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aromaster.com\/it\/product\/kit-di-aromi-maestro-del-vino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complete<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but if you do an online search you\u2019ll definitely find other solutions that suit your needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>4) Study the potential scents of a varietal<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps studying isn\u2019t your forte, but if you\u2019ve gotten this far then that means you\u2019re an intrepid explorer of human knowledge. Or that you\u2019ve never been able to identify even one aroma in a glass of wine and you\u2019re desperate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t worry: there\u2019s a solution to everything, but it takes some practice!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every varietal, meaning every kind of grape, has certain characteristic aromas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Syrah has a strong and pungent scent of black pepper and Cabernet Franc is known for its green pepper aroma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately not all varietals have such specific distinguishing features, only those considered aromatic and semi-aromatic. The other grapes, the neutral ones (which account for most varietals) are more difficult to recognize because in these cases climate and region play a very important role as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not necessary to memorize every varietal of course, but I do suggest that you learn the most famous or at least your favorites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The steps, therefore, are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn which are the main <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quattrocalici.it\/ricerca\/vitigni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Italian varietals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn which are the main scents used to describe them;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taste the \u201csingle-varietal\u201d wines, or those produced with a single kind of grape, in order to better distinguish their aromas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recommend starting with aromatic and semi-aromatic wines, or rather those produced with particularly fragrant grapes, because these possess a very high concentration of fragrant molecules and are rich in varietal aromas which make them recognizable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-7646\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/karate_uva_INNER.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which are they? There aren\u2019t very many in Italy or the world and must, unfortunately, be memorized, a bit like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phrasal verbs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>AROMATIC<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gewurztraminer: litchi, rose<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brachetto: strawberry and orange zest<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moscato: orange blossoms and citrus<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malvasia: apricot, honey<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>SEMI-AROMATIC<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sauvignon Blanc: grapefruit, tomato leaves, asparagus, cat pee<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riesling: citrus and kerosene<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glera (prosecco): green apple<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay: Williams pear and dried fruit<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syrah: black pepper<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabernet Franc: green pepper<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5) Really smell a wine and take clues from its label<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we have several concepts under our belt, the time has come to put them into practice and move on to tasting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To really smell a wine it\u2019s important to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swirl the wine around in the glass (if it\u2019s sparkling wine then skip this step)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wait for the wine to settle in the glass and only then bring it to you nose (without disturbing it)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now put your nose in the glass, without drowning in it, and inhale deeply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your nose reaches a point of saturation, so inhale several times but then remove the glass so that you\u2019ll still be able to perceive the aromas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A very useful \u201ctrick\u201d when practicing at home is to read the back of the label, where the wine\u2019s aromas are often specified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s clear that every mother loves her child, and that producers therefore exaggerate a bit in the description of their wine\u2019s fragrances, it\u2019s also true that having some scents for reference can help to better distinguish the aromas in the glass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point try to identify the fragrances. Start with the families and then move on to more specific scents, trying to identify the aromas that you read on the label.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>6) Choose the right glass!<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no sense in trying to smell the aromas of a wine if you\u2019re practicing with a plastic cup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t particularly well equipped and don\u2019t happen to have a set of glasses for every type of wine, at least purchase a tulip-shaped tasting glass, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.it\/Spiegelau-Nachtmann-Bicchieri-Degustazione-Professionale\/dp\/B013R6APWG\/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?dchild=1&amp;keywords=bicchieri+da+degustazione&amp;qid=1617208939&amp;sr=8-4-spons&amp;psc=1&amp;spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzTkZVUEJQMDhEQ0hXJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzI4NTMwMllaOFFIRzBFVEdRTiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNzEzNDIxUEw0UzlFUjlaNzZPJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like this one.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-7638\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/karate_calici_INNER.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>7) Do a tasting with someone who\u2019s more of an expert than yourself<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To improve your olfactory capacity, it\u2019s a good idea to do some tastings with someone who is more of an expert than yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only will they be able to suggest \u201cinstructional\u201d bottles, but hopefully good ones as well!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>8) Write down the aromas that you smell<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you do a tasting, I recommend keeping a book with you in which to take notes on the wine (name, winery, year) and on the aromas which stood out the most for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing them down will help you to memorize them better!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>9) Do comparative tastings<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite your training sessions, do wines continue to seem very similar to one another?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then try comparing them in order to better notice their differences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pour two different wines at the same time and smell them, one at a time &#8211; making sure to pause between one \u201csniff\u201d and the other. Try to evaluate the differences and take note of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can try comparing wines made from the same grape or from different years. By doing this you\u2019ll begin to appreciate how terrain and climate influence a wine\u2019s flavor and fragrance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>10) Do you want to earn your black belt? Practice \u201cblind\u201d wine tastings<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blind wine tasting is an extreme sport for anyone who considers him\/herself a wine connoisseur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That thrill that travels down your spine as you courageously venture out among both familiar and entirely made up scents, afraid of being discovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who are truly fearless challenge fate by going so far as to try to guess the varietal and year of production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-7640\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/karate_degustazione_alla_cieca_INNER.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t worry, I\u2019m not suggesting that you do anything of the sort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather, I recommend that you train your nose by blind-smelling fragrances and pure essences and then checking to see if you were right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will help you to train your sense of smell and give you an edge during those feared blind tastings, when you will have become a true champion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expect to smell those same aromas in wine, but a lot milder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to all of these suggestions, I\u2019d like to add that of maintaining your curiosity and always opening as many bottles as possible, blindfolded or not.
