<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">German beers fall into the Czech-German category, one of the three historical-geographical continental beer families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within this diverse group, made up of approximately <\/span><b>thirty different types<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of beer, the primary <\/span><b>\u201cshareholder\u201d is Germany, accounting for 76%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the styles. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In second place is the <\/span><b>Czech Republic with 14%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hence the term Czech-German<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and finally there are Austria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, <\/span><b>together accounting for the remaining 10%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But&#8230; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">careful, here comes a plot twist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are you sure that all German beers are German? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germany, like Italy, was unified relatively recently, in 1871.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up until then it was, like our own <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belpaese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made up of multiple sovereign and independent states. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of these, one of the most important has always been <\/span><b>Bavaria, the brewing empire par excellence. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bavarian beers first conquered Germany, in its entirety, and then the rest of the world, spreading rapidly and becoming one of the most popular styles worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vast majority of German beers, <\/span><b>therefore, aren\u2019t German&#8230; but Bavarian! <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to habit and proximity, we tend to<\/span><b> confuse Bavaria and Germany<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to blur the lines between the two, to stereotype, and to extend <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oktoberfest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to an entire nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like our friends Otto and Franz, who are evidently Bavarian! <\/span><b>Still not convinced?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I see we\u2019ve got a doubting Thomas on our hands!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Helles? Bavarian. Lager? Bavarian. Weizen? Bavarian. Bock? ALTBIER<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altbier, known <\/span><b>simply as Alt among friends, is a traditional beer of D\u00fcsseldorf<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in North Rhine-Westphalia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its secret is hidden in its name. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altbier, literally \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old beer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in German, implies the ancient method of production, before everything became Bavarian-ized. <\/span><b>As with all historic beers, top-fermenting yeast<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is still used to produce it, in contrast to the bottom-fermenting lagers produced in the south. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This style originated in the city in 1709, surviving against all odds and continuing to exist to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s <\/span><b>well-balanced, with an amber-copper color, harmonious bitter-sweet taste<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and pleasant carbonation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being a light and drinkable beer (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only 5% ABV<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), it has a rich aromatic profile characterized by malt, bread, cherries, and dried fruit, which makes it <\/span><b>anything but ordinary or predictable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verdict: <\/span><b>an old dame<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. BERLINER WEISSE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this, we move directly to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">capital city<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Germany, which from now on, even for you, will no longer be gastronomically famous only for its <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currywurst<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the name, the only thing it has in common with its more famous Bavarian cousin, the Weizen, <\/span><b>is the use of wheat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re once again talking about an ancient product, first created in the 16th century and inspired by the (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) much more famous wheat beers of Hamburg (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the brewing world is more of a spy-story than you\u2019d think!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, in addition to the use of top fermentation, a <\/span><b>second bacterial fermentation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes place, in which lactobacilli transform simple sugars into <\/span><b>lactic acid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating an irrevocably characteristic taste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result is a very light beer (3% ABV), featuring a blend of flavors such as <\/span><b>wheat, lemon, and green apple<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It has a pale color and refreshing taste, thanks to its <\/span><b>carbonation and acidity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This beer reached its <\/span><b>peak of fame in the 19th century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when, thanks to these characteristics, the Napoleonic French gave it the nickname &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Champagne of the North<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To soften its acidity, it\u2019s traditionally consumed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;mit schuss&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning with the <\/span><b>addition of syrup<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I see you wrinkling your nose<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) such as raspberry, sweet woodruff, or caraway. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, it\u2019s the only beer in the world that\u2019s consumed&#8230;<\/span><b> with a straw!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verdict: <\/span><b>eccentric as a Berlin nightclub<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. GOSE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be careful! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s absolutely <\/span><b>not to be confused with the Belgian Gueuze<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with which it shares only a phonetic similarity (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and is so easy to mispronounce<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gose is one of the <\/span><b>oldest beers in all of Germany<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legend has it that Gose was first produced as early as the year 1000 in Goslar, Saxony, a town situated on the <\/span><b>Gose River, from which it takes its name<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This river has a unique characteristic: <\/span><b>it\u2019s salty! <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when I say salty, I mean it&#8217;s like a shot of water from the port of Marghera in Venice. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This incredible sapidity is transmitted entirely to the beer, to which <\/span><b>\u00a0lactic acid, from lattobacilli, and coriander <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0are added, and&#8230;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s a done deal!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The region is rich in salt mines, such as those in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wolfenb\u00fcttel or Stassfurt, and the river, which traverses the terrains and mountains, erodes the salt, resulting in its savory character. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the financial crisis and the desertion of the mines, <\/span><b>production moved<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to nearby (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as richer and more stable<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><b>Lipsia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in order to satisfy the tastes and preferences of their customers, the master brewers were forced to <\/span><b>add salt to the recipe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as the water in Leipzig was salt-free. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Production experienced a crisis <\/span><b>during WWII, and in 1966 the last historic brewery closed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting in the 1980s and 1990s, it would take three breweries, three master brewers (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a little off their rockers if we\u2019re being honest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and two failed attempts to revive it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verdict: <\/span><b>thirsty for saltwater<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>5. K\u00d6LSCH<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nomen omen<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">once again, (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the brewing world certainly doesn\u2019t stand out for its imaginative toponymy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><b>K\u00f6lsch, if produced in Cologne, German Ale for the rest of the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a close relative of D\u00fcsseldorf&#8217;s Alt (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they\u2019re separated by only 39 km<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actually, truth be told, until the mid-19th century <\/span><b>they were the very same beer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During that period <\/span><b>the new Pale Malts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (light malts that originated in England) arrived in Germany as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00fcsseldorf continued on its own traditionalist and conservative path, while Cologne succumbed to fashion and <\/span><b>began inserting them in its recipe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effectively<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two different beers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K\u00f6lsch is a <\/span><b>pale, light beer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% ABV<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), with a <\/span><b>well-balanced and light body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its refreshing quality, combined with a high amount of carbonization, are two of its distinctive features. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to preserve these characteristics, in addition to being served cold, it\u2019s also traditionally served in a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stange<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a<\/span><b> small, narrow, tall glass that contains only 200 ml of liquid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, completely out of scale with Germany\u2019s thirsty standards.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verdict: <\/span><b>the revenge of the blondes<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>6.
