fusion-text-1\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even those who have never been to Oktoberfest know that it\u2019s the beer festival to end all beer festivals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6 million visitors, seating for 100,000 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>420,000 square meters, 7.5 million mugs of beer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 75,000 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bayerische haxen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bavarian pork shanks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), 1.1 million <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">henle <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spit-roasted half chickens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and 280,000 hotdogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All in just seventeen days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These massive numbers can refer to only one thing: <\/span><b>Munich\u2019s <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oktoberfest.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Oktoberfest<\/i><\/b><\/a><b>, the biggest beer festival in the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s only been cancelled 23 times in 212 years, and always for trivial reasons like the Napoleonic Wars, cholera, World Wars I and II, etc&#8230;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Oktoberfest is finally opening its doors again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A WEDDING FEAST WITH LITTLE BEER<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 12th, 1810, an Italian (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yes, you read that right, an Italian!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Andrea Michele Dall\u2019Armi, a banker from Trento who had moved to Munich, organized five days of public and private festivities to <\/span><b>celebrate the marriage between Crown Prince Ludwig I of the House of Wittelsbach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as King Louis I of Bavaria, and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen of Saxony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to partying, no one holds a candle to us!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The last of these public events and the climax of the wedding celebrations, known as Oktoberfest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (literally the festival of October) took place in a simple field (\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wiese\u201d in German<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) on the outskirts of the city, later renamed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theresienwiese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in honor of the bride. Here a <\/span><b>horse race<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was held, <\/span><b>with 40,000 Bavarians <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the entire royal family in attendance. The celebrations met with such success throughout the region, that <\/span><b>King Maximillian I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ludwig\u2019s father, <\/span><b>asked to repeat them the following year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thus turning them into a regular and traditional event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up until 1818 it was organized privately, but in 1819 the <\/span><b>City of Munich, seeing an opportunity to attract thousands of tourists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thus replenish the municipal treasury, <\/span><b>obtained the rights to the event<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload size-full wp-image-15829 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5.jpg\" alt=\"ruota panoramica\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5-200x100.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5-500x250.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest5.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>A TRUE CARNIVAL<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wiesn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as Oktoberfest is called by Munich\u2019s residents<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) was quite different from what we\u2019re familiar with today, and the <\/span><b>focus, for more than half a century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether you believe it or not, <\/span><b>wasn\u2019t beer.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting with the second edition, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/interforst.com\/en\/?utm_source=www.interforst.de&amp;utm_medium=redirect&amp;utm_campaign=redirect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>agricultural fair<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was incorporated (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these days organized only every four years, sort of like the Olympics and the World Cup<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to promote Bavaria\u2019s agricultural sector and economy. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Landwirtschaftliche Verein in Bayern<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newly formed Agricultural Association of Bavaria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) was the organizer for two editions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1818 <\/span><b>a lottery, rides, and swings <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were added. Today the big amusement park is an essential part of the festival and still features attractions from the early 20th century, the undeniable symbol of which, since 1979, is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riesenrad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the iconic 50-meter high panoramic ferris wheel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1826 <\/span><b>pyrotechnic shows<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were introduced, and in 1869 a <\/span><b>small Grand Guignol-esque theatre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was added, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schichtl.by\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schichtl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is still in operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>END OF SEASON SALES<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what about the beer?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d you\u2019re probably thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Beer finally arrived for the seventh edition, in 1818<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, during which it was found (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and could be drunk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in a limited fashion, <\/span><b>within small and ramshackle sheds or wooden stalls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thanks to the festival\u2019s <\/span><b>fusion with a deeply rooted brewing tradition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that existed within the city walls. Before that the nearest brewery was located 3 km from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theresienwiese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which beers were served? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Munich Dunkel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll say, Munich\u2019s traditional beer! Sorry, but wrong! It was the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ur- M\u00e4rzen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Bavaria, up until 1533, by order of Duke Albert V (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and not the overly cited Purity Order!), <\/span><\/i><b><i>brewing was prohibited between the feast days of St. Michael and St. George<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(April 23 &#8211; September 29), for reasons of public safety (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brewing was done over an open flame in wooden buildings&#8230; which is a bit like driving like a maniac without headlights at night<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), as well as hygiene (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a world without refrigerators, beer could easily become a breeding ground for bacteria and wild yeasts<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So<\/span><b> brewers accumulated large stockpiles of beer in March <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hence the name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), so as to have enough to last for the whole summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This beer, despite not having a specific style, was <\/span><b>stronger, fuller bodied, more alcoholic and had more hops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than the normal production in order to best withstand the summer months. Come September 29th, when the brewing facilities opened once again, it was necessary to <\/span><b>empty the warehouses of all the remaining old beer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What better way than with a beer festival?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload size-full wp-image-15835 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2.jpg\" alt=\"oktoberfest\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2-200x100.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2-500x250.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Inner_Torna_Oktoberfest2.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>HAPPY BIRTHDAY M\u00c4RZEN<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the situation until 1872, when the beer that was destined to change <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oktoberfest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forever was first introduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1833, two young descendants of brewing families, Gabriel Sedlmayr (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aka Mr. Spaten<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) from Bavaria and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreher.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anton Dreher<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perhaps the name rings a bell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), were sent on their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grand Tour <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Europe (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still very much in vogue at the time among noble families and wealthy bourgeois<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They spent most of their time in England, at the time an unquestionable beacon of the brewing industry, where, thanks to the industrial revolution, <\/span><b>the first pale ales, in a world of dark beers, were born<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the famous <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burton Ales<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The two found open doors to all of the most important British breweries, which were proud to show off their results and discoveries to the rest of Europe, from <\/span><b>the use of <\/b><b><i>carbon coke<\/i><\/b><b>, to the creation of <\/b><b><i>pale<\/i><\/b><b> malts, thanks to the arrival of the <\/b><b><i>Black Patent<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first grain oven that avoided direct contact with the combustion smoke, leaving the malt lighter and without a smokey flavor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, his Royal Highness\u2019s naive <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brewers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> weren\u2019t repaid in kind, as the young pair of German <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Braumeisters <\/span><\/i><b>turned their trip into true industrial espionage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u00e0 la Mata Hari!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabriel and Anton were the cat and the fox. They copied everything,<\/span><b> secretly measuring temperatures with a thermometer and even using double-bottomed walking sticks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One would distract the brewer and the other, using the stick, would steal a sample of must or beer to analyze calmly back at their hotel.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back home, thanks to all of their \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discoveries<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (air quotes), and after several years of studying them, in 1841 <\/span><b>Dreher invented the Vienna while Sedlmayr established the characteristics for the <\/b><b><i>M\u00e4rzen <\/i><\/b><b>style<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This version wasn\u2019t perfected until 1872 when, with the name <\/span><b><i>Oktoberfestbier<\/i><\/b><b>, invented by Spaten<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the occasion, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.0 release<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was presented in Munich. <\/span><b>It was an absolute success, so much so that it became the official beer of the event<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and forced all the other breweries to produce one if they wanted to participate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>EVEN LEGENDS GROW OLD<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These beers enjoyed uninterrupted success until 1976, the year that Paulaner, Spaten\u2019s rival, changed all the rules. The former brewery of the Pauline Fathers (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having left Calabria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) wanted to sell more beer and understood that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M\u00e4rzen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was too rich.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To sell 7.5 million mugs of beer, something quite different was needed. And so it introduced its <\/span><b><i>Festbier<\/i><\/b><b>, a lighter, less malty, and less alcoholic version<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that was generally milder (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a sort of Sunday Helles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), making it possible to drink (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and sell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) more&#8230;much more. The term <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Festbier<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like the term <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M\u00e4rzen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, already existed, but, in the German culture, indicated, without exception, <\/span><b>any special beer associated with a holiday<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from Christmas beer to Pentecost. The journey continued, in a single direction, until <\/span><b>1990, the year in which <\/b><b><i>M\u00e4rzen<\/i><\/b><b> disappeared permanently from<\/b><b><i> Oktoberfest<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>AND THEN THERE WAS BEER!<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1880 beer finally became <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oktoberfest\u2019s<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">core-business<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the foundation for the modern version was established. This burly and mustachioed innkeeper of Haderm\u00fchle, in the Nuremberg district of Franconia, a region that had always been in bitter conflict with Bavaria, had a brilliant idea. A stubborn and visionary businessman, though not quite a saint, he was the <\/span><b>first to imagine and create that which would become the prototype of today\u2019s <\/b><b><i>Oktoberfest<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from its atmosphere to its customs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1898, through scamming and corruption <\/span><b>he managed to obtain the license for a plot of land at the <\/b><b><i>Theresienwiese<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with only one magistrate voting against him, despite not being from Munich (\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theoretically<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d an essential requirement) and despite not meeting the prerequisites for participation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven years earlier, the Munich-based innkeeper Michael Schottenhamel, whose family had a stall at the 1867 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oktoberfest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, had proposed a very similar pavilion project which was turned down by the committee. Then, thanks to four front-men, Lang purchased other plots adjacent to his own, tore down stalls, and built the <\/span><b><i>Bayerische Riesenhalle<\/i><\/b><b> (<\/b><b><i>the giant Bavarian hall<\/i><\/b><b>), the first large pavilion in history<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1,000 square meters, seating for 6,000, 120 employees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and 20 times bigger than any other stand at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oktoberfest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> up to that point. Inside the pavilion, a <\/span><b>30-piece orchestra <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oberland Brass Band)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> played free live music on stage from 10am to 11:30pm, with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herr \u201cKrokodil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (German for crocodile, his nickname) conducting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ein Prosit der Gem\u00fctlichkeit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d by Georg Kunoth, <\/span><b>the most famous <\/b><b><i>Wiesnlied<\/i><\/b><b> and today the anthem of <\/b><b><i>Oktoberfest<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, acquired its legendary fame thanks to Lang, who distributed 50,000 booklets with the text of the songs in order to encourage participants to sing.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>The orchestras of the time didn\u2019t have singers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it was too difficult to get microphones (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which had only been invented several years earlier, in 1870, by a German no less, Emile Berliner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), thus <\/span><b>those in attendance became a chorus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, having fun and staying even longer, and, in turn, tempting others to participate, <\/span><b>ultimately drinking more and spending more money<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If you want to get an idea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, albeit romanticized, <\/span><b>of what the early festival and its atmosphere were like<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if you haven\u2019t already seen it, check out the miniseries \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oktoberfest: Beer &amp; Blood<\/span><\/i><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inspired by the life of Lang himself. <\/span><b>The <\/b><b><i>Bayerische Roesenhall <\/i><\/b><b>became the main attraction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and, starting the following year, all of the other innkeepers and breweries had to take action, following and emulating Georg\u2019s example and creating the modern-day <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oktoberfest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One can lose a battle, but win the war, and the Schottenhamels ultimately got their revenge. <\/span><b>Today the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.festhalle-schottenhamel.de\/de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Schottenhamel-Festhall<\/i><\/b><\/a><b> is the iconic pavilion where<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at 12pm on opening day, after the explosion of 12 firecrackers, <\/span><b>the \u201c<\/b><b><i>O\u2019Zapft is!<\/i><\/b><b>\u201d opening ritual takes place<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mayor of the city, accompanied by the sound of beating drums, inserts the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zwickl <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tap<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the inaugural keg, and shouts \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Zapft is! Auf eine friedliche Wiesn!\u201d (It is tapped! To a peaceful Oktoberfest!\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).
