It\u2019s summertime, as the timeless Gershwin\/Fitzgerald\/Armstrong trio sang (or, more recently, Morcheeba), in one of the most popular jazz standards in international musical history.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>season, commonly perceived by the general public as the most beer-friendly of all<\/b>, in which even those who aren\u2019t beer connoisseurs or those who are diehard wine lovers, let themselves be seduced by this bubbly amber beverage and how <\/span>easily it goes down, with its low alcohol content and light, thirst quenching bitterness<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But <\/span>if you\u2019re a true beer lover<\/b>, you\u2019re not interested in the ordinary old beer-centered pool parties, with shouts of \u201cToga! Toga! Toga!\u201d or the thousands of local beer fests which pop up every year like mushrooms throughout the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019re <\/span>looking for something more…and I\u2019m here to give it to you!<\/b><\/p>\n

Here are the best summer 2022 beer experiences for you.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. TREATMENTS AT A BEER-SPA<\/b><\/h2>\n

Do you dream of competing with the Ptolemaic Queen of Egypt and her donkey milk, but feel more like Obelix in \u201cAsterix and Cleopatra\u201d (\u201cLoss of appetite is a dreadful blight!\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

Then I have the perfect solution for you!<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s called a <\/span>Beer Spa<\/b>, featuring <\/span>beer, thermal baths, and wellness<\/b>. Large <\/span>pools full of beer, that you can actually bathe in<\/b>, and a tap from which you can help yourself to all-you-can-drink! Plus a selection of <\/span>beer-based treatments<\/b>. These are becoming more and more popular throughout Europe, including Italy, but the first and original one is that of the <\/span>Starkenberger Brewery<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Located in Tarrenz, just a one-hour drive from Brenner, near the famous and ever-popular Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, Austria. Thanks to its <\/span>Alpine lakes, crystalline water, mountain paths, hiking trails, and mountain biking, it\u2019s also a perfect summer destination<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The brewery, open since 1810 and situated within the local castle, a medieval fort from the 14th century, produces <\/span>seven different beers,<\/span> from <\/span>#Loyal<\/b> to <\/span>#Straightforward<\/b> (if you don\u2019t know what we\u2019re talking about then hurry and take our <\/span>Taste Test<\/span><\/a>!), and two radlers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here you can enjoy bathing in a 12,000 liter pool, the only one of its kind, in which <\/span>300 liters of beer<\/b> are poured.<\/span><\/p>\n

They say that beer baths, thanks to the hops, <\/span>improve circulation, make skin softer and more supple, are relaxing, and have detoxifying properties<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, after a bit of pampering, you can enjoy a nice brewery-style dinner directly in the castle\u2019s stube, where, in addition to tasting the beers which are produced there, you\u2019ll be offered a true <\/span>traditional and beer-themed Tyrolean menu<\/b>: from gulash prepared with beer to pork tenderloin in a dark beer sauce.<\/span><\/p>\n

The brewery can accommodate you at <\/span>La Giuliva<\/span><\/a>, its splendid B&B, and feed you at the <\/span>Grotta Azzurra<\/span><\/a>, their pastry shop\/bistrot.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the beers, the <\/span>crystalline sea, and the breathtaking views<\/b>, even more beautiful while sipping a beer, they\u2019re <\/span>known for their delicious Neapolitan pastries<\/b>, from their caprese cake to the sfogliatelle, from the bab\u00e0 made with Capri limoncello to the traditional pastiera, spoiling you from breakfast all the way to after dinner, including at snack time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t feel discouraged, I have the right destination for you too. <\/span>What do you think of Brussels, the capital of Europe? <\/b>The Grand Place, the Atomium, the Mannequin Pis, the Comic Book Museum, and the Mus\u00e9e Magritte.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to being, if you\u2019re gluttonous like me, the <\/span>World Capital of Chocolate<\/b> and one of the undisputed beer capitals of the world, together with Munich, Dublin, Prague, and London. Perfect, all that\u2019s left is to <\/span>reserve one of the twenty-two rooms<\/b> in the <\/span>Het Anker Hotel<\/span><\/a> (the welcome drink is, obviously, a beer!).<\/span><\/p>\n

Het Anker<\/span><\/a> is one of the <\/span>oldest (founded in 1410), well-known, and award winning breweries in Belgium<\/b> (the one that produces Gouden Carolus, Lucifer, Boscoli, and Maneblusser, to be clear), and <\/span>you can stay overnight in the historic Mechelen brewery itself<\/b>, 25 km north in the suburbs of Brussels.<\/span><\/p>\n

Between Friday and Sunday you can go on a <\/span>tour<\/span><\/a> of the production area, meet the master brewer, participate in guided tastings, and, in the evening, dine at the <\/span>brasserie<\/span><\/a>, also located within the brewery, serving <\/span>specialties from Flanders, cooked with beer and paired with beer<\/b>.\u00a0 <\/span>Also located in the brewery, which <\/span>produces an excellent whisky and sake<\/b>, is a <\/span>shop<\/span> where you can purchase souvenirs before returning home. Forget about your average postcards and magnets! PS: the night tables in each room are two <\/span>early 20th century wooden beer crates<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gorgeous!<\/span><\/p>\n

4. NOT JUST OKTOBERFEST<\/b><\/h2>\n

Forget your small town beer festivals (no offense intended, they\u2019re definitely fun!), but <\/span>there are great summer festivals all over the world<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

My advice? I don\u2019t even have to think about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

One stands out above the rest: <\/span>the Great British Beer Festival<\/span><\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n

This takes place in London, at the Olympia London, a fantastic Art Noveau-style structure and exhibition center in West Kensington, in the very central neighborhood of Hammersmith and Fulham. <\/span>Organized by (drumroll please) none other than <\/span>Cam.R.A.<\/span>, the <\/span>first association in the world working to promote high quality artisan beers and safeguard traditional British beers<\/b>, founded in 1971, and a member of the <\/span>E.B.C.U.<\/span>, the European Beer Consumers\u2019 Union.<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, a piece of history and an important institution (it\u2019s partly their fault that you drink good beer today!)<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival takes place from August 2nd to 6th <\/b>(<\/span>admission is \u00a320<\/b> if <\/span>you reserve tickets<\/span><\/a>, or \u00a324 if you pay there) and offers the opportunity to <\/span>taste over 900 beers and hard ciders<\/b>, especially British ones, while enjoying concerts, events, performances, and food stands. <\/span>It\u2019s the perfect occasion not only to visit \u201cThe Big Smoke\u201d, one of the richest and most popular capitals in the world, but also to <\/span>taste English beers, from the rarest to the most famous. <\/b>A triumph of English I.P.A., British Brown Ale, Bitter, Barley Wine, English Porter, and Golden Ale.<\/span><\/p>\n

This edition\u2019s guests will include giants of the brewing world, like <\/span>Adnams<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Bishop Nick<\/span><\/a>, as well as micro-producers like <\/span>The Wild Beer<\/span><\/a>, with <\/span>its<\/b> beers that have been rigorously aged in wooden barrels, its alternative fermentation methods, and its unorthodox yeasts<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the festival, for \u00a316, you can also <\/span>participate<\/span><\/a> in an <\/span>Introductory Course to Beer Tasting<\/b>, held by Cam.R.A. beer-tasters, or, for \u00a320, a <\/span>City of London Tasting Tour<\/b>, during which Des De Moor himself, the well-known English singer and beer-writer, will take you from pub to pub, <\/span>discovering the best pints available in the city<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that\u2019s a festival!<\/span><\/p>\n

5. A FOUNTAIN OF BEER<\/b><\/h2>\n

In the heart of Slovenia, amidst woods, parks, and crystalline lakes, there\u2019s a <\/span>fountain… of beer! <\/b>No, it\u2019s not the start of a Brothers Grimm fairytale, but rather a reality in \u017dalec, a small city with 20,000 inhabitants in the Savjniska region, right in the center of the country. Here, in 2016, the city government created the <\/span>first fountain of beer in the world<\/b>, open from June to August.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s called <\/span>Zeleno Zlato<\/span><\/a> (\u201cgreen gold\u201d), referring to hops, which are also depicted in the municipal coat of arms and are a fundamental ingredient in beer, as well as a traditional local product.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 1886 <\/span>Slovenia has produced excellent hops<\/b> in this area of the country and is the <\/span>fifth producer of hops worldwide<\/b>, possessing one of the few and <\/span>rare noble varieties, the Styrian Golding<\/b>, native to this area. <\/span>The fountain is comprised of a structure with six columns from which <\/span>six different and excellent beers flow from 10am to 10pm, plus a seventh tap with water for rinsing your mouth.<\/b><\/p>\n

To enjoy it, you need a <\/span>specific mug, equipped with a special microchip<\/b> that the fountain recognizes in order to pour <\/span>six different 10 ml tastes<\/b> of the beers offered. The mug can be purchased directly at the fountain, <\/span>the Tourist Office<\/span><\/a>, or the <\/span>Hops Museum<\/span><\/a> (which I encourage visiting) for \u20ac9. <\/span>Among the beers offered, all of which are worth tasting and perfect for the summer with their 4.9%-5.2% ABV, one in particular stands out, also symbolically: the <\/span>Kukec from the Te\u017eak brewery<\/b>, named after Simon Kukec, the man who, in the 19th century, more than anyone else pushed the development of the Slovenian beer industry, a true national hero.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. MAKE YOUR OWN BEER!<\/b><\/h2>\n

Are you a dynamic type? Someone who gets bored sitting under a beach umbrella doing nothing? <\/span>Don\u2019t worry, I haven\u2019t forgotten about you.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s called <\/span>Mosto di Malto<\/span><\/a> and it\u2019s in Prato.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the heart of <\/span>Tusany, the cradle of the Renaissance, just a stone\u2019s throw from Florence, where you can visit the Prato Cathedral and the Emperor\u2019s Castle<\/b> and enjoy pappa al pomodoro, schiacciata with Prato Mortadella (less well-known than that of Bologna, but just as good), cantucci, and the ever-popular Prato peaches, two soft cakes, soaked in alchermes and held together with custard… As you can see, it\u2019s no chore to go there.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this small paradise, which our country is full of, be sure to visit this small pub\/beer-shop in the city center. <\/span>In addition to the <\/span>incredible variety of beers<\/b>, roughly <\/span>200 labels<\/span><\/a> available either on tap or by the bottle, which can be enjoyed there or taken away, you can make your own beer.<\/span><\/p>\n

I mean that literally!<\/b><\/p>\n

Just two days a week, Thursday and Saturday, and only <\/span>with a reservation<\/span><\/a>, the laboratory (like none other in Italy) <\/span>opens up to the public and you can become a true brewmaster<\/b>, learning the ancient art of beer making.<\/span><\/p>\n

Choose from the eleven recipes offered by the house<\/b>, or modify one and create your own<\/span>, and after three and a half hours of work, assisted by highly skilled personnel, your wort will be ready. <\/b>After 15 days, you\u2019ll be able to stop by again to pick up your <\/span>ten liters, already bottled and with your personalized label<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A really fun, useful, dynamic, and not overly exclusive experience: it only costs between \u20ac99 and \u20ac130. <\/span>I think that\u2019s everything… Suggestions for every taste and interest. Now you have no more excuses not to dedicate yourself to beer this summer!<\/span><\/p>\n

All that\u2019s left to do is make a reservation and go.<\/span><\/p>\n
