Happy birthday Weizen!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container fusion-parallax-none nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling lazyload\" style=\"--awb-background-position:center top;--awb-background-repeat:repeat-y;--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-padding-top:10px;--awb-padding-right:30px;--awb-padding-bottom:10px;--awb-padding-left:30px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" data-bg=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/element_articolo_2mid-1000.png\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1996.8px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\" id=\"magazine-article\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\" style=\"--awb-text-transform:none;\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you call it Weiss or Weizen, it\u2019s always the king of summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the hottest months, this <\/span><b>light, mildly alcoholic, sweet, and creamy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beer can win anyone over, not just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beer lovers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to <\/span><b>how easy it is to drink, how refreshing and thirst-quenching it is, and it\u2019s champagne-like bubbles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, every year it\u2019s voted among the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summertime best-sellers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and not just in its hometown of Bavaria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s name already tells us a lot about it: <\/span><b><i>Weizenbier <\/i><\/b><b>or <\/b><b><i>Wei\u00dfbier<\/i><\/b><b>, literally \u201cwheat beer\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">together with Blanche, Gose, and Grodziskie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or <\/span><b>\u201cWhite Beer\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not because of its characteristic milky color, but because of the color of the wheat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s right, because contrary to most beer styles, <\/span><b>it\u2019s not produced with barley malt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but rather with at least 50% (and even up to 70%) malted wheat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE EDICT OF PURITY&#8230;IS A MASSIVE LOAD OF C**P!<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an ancient product, like all of the few survivors of the high fermentation brewing style in Germany, the unquestionable homeland (since the 15 century) of low fermentation beers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some proto-Weizens, or other <\/span><b>wheat beers, already existed in Hamburg in 1410<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which were then copied by master brewers in Berlin (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the well-known Berliner Weisse, add it to you list!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Hannover, Vienna, and Bohemia, however it was only <\/span><\/i><b>in Bavaria that these developed into a true style<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in Germany (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019ll say<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)&#8230; wasn\u2019t there the famous <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reinheitsgebot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a.k.a. the Edict of Purity? &#8230;which, among other things, <\/span><b>imposed the exclusive use of barley in beer production<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>beer = water + barley + hops<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a wonder that they <\/span><b>survived and reached the present day safe and sound<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The elusive, and <\/span><b>almost always misquoted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingolstadt edict, of 1516, by Duke William IV of the Wittelsbach family, effectively imposed on the duchy, then on all of Germany, the <\/span><b>exclusive use of this grain in beer production<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, condemning the country\u2019s many historic beer styles to extinction. With just a few \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ifs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, because <\/span><b>special licenses for certain incriminating styles were granted to nobles and clergy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noblesse oblige<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Case in point: our Weizen. Simultaneously to the edit, William conceded an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unicum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to all of Bavaria. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He granted a <\/span><b>commercial monopoly to the Degenberg family <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who made a lot of silver thalers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), already ministerial officials of the Bogen Counts, as well as the title of \u201cbaron\u201d, in order to seal their loyalty and alliance, thus saving, albeit involuntarily, our endangered brew \u201cpanda\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and without bothering the WWF<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good luck is blind, but bad luck has perfect vision, and less than one hundred years later, in 1602, the family was left <\/span><b>without male heirs to carry on the lineage, something which is fundamental for succession<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to the strict dictates of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geschlossener Hof<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the Entailed Farm Law (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basically&#8230; the first born son gets everything!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was another time, in which gender equality didn\u2019t even exist as a passing thought, and the new Duke of Bavaria, Maximilian the Great, seized the opportunity and <\/span><b>claimed the Degenberg\u2019s land, castle, and rights for himself<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game over<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weizen therefor returned to the capital, and <\/span><b>continued to be produced, and sold, in a new brewery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, located in the center for the city and specially constructed by the Wittelsbach, with the evocative name of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weisses Br\u00e4uhaus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weizen brewery<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-15557\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2.jpg\" alt=\"weizen\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2-200x100.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2-500x250.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Inner_150anni_weizen2.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE BIRTH OF A LEGEND<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the world of beer has also always ben susceptible to trends, and the <\/span><b>popularization of <\/b><b><i>Lager<\/i><\/b><b> styles in the 19th century in Germany <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the rest of the world, the M\u00fcnchen Dunkel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in primis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made the Wei\u00df lose some of its luster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>high fermentation beers in Bavaria, in the decade from 1860 to 1870, dropped from 68% to 2% of the market<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a result, it made no sense (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or money<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for the royal house to maintain a monopoly. Thus, in 1872, Duke Ludwig II (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sometimes called the \u201cFairy King\u201d, who lived in the caste which inspired the famous Disney castle and was more attracted to courtiers and stable hands than to saving the country from bankruptcy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><b>rented out the new brewery and the recipe to master brewer Georg Schneider<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who, together with his son (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georg II),<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> purchased them several years later, founding the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/schneider-weisse.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Weissbierbrauerei G. Schneider &amp; Sohn<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or simply <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/schneider-weisse.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Schneider<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t know if our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steve Jobs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of this Germanic brewing style (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the entire lineage of beers to come<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) was more <\/span><b>crazy, stubborn, or delusional to fixate on a beer that, by then, had lost all popularity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact remains that the Schneiders had to <\/span><b>wait a whole century, until the 1960s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, surviving the destruction of the brewery in the 1944 bombings and continuing stoically to produce white beer, <\/span><b>for Weizen to came back into fashion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and eventually become an unquestionable symbol of Bavaria. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time is a gentleman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, as Voltaire taught us, and perseverance is rewarded, with <\/span><b>Georg\u2019s very first white beer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which became his \u201cNumber One Dime\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) ultimately<\/span><b> shaping today\u2019s Wei\u00df style, now recognized in the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjcp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>BJCP<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a.k.a. the beer taster\u2019s bible).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE WEIZEN IDENTIKIT<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>What are the characteristics of a perfect Weizen?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This beer, with a <\/span><b>#Generous <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">character (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and if you still don\u2019t know what I\u2019m talking about, hurry and take the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/test\/fai-il-test\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taste Test<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! You might be the only one who hasn\u2019t yet&#8230;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), must be <\/span><b>light in color, between straw and golden yellow, with a creamy and long-lasting foam, a pronounced bubbliness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a characteristic aroma of banana (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a blessing and a curse<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), banana, and&#8230; <\/span><b>did I already say banana<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus notes of <\/span><b>clove, vanilla, and a hint of bubble gum <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">think Bazooka Joe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitter? N\/A. It\u2019s these very characteristics (banana and the absence of bitterness) that make it <\/span><b>the most bullied beer on the planet by <\/b><b><i>beer-geeks<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In actuality, following in the footsteps of the Schneiders, now, for the record, at Georg VI (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ah&#8230; how creative the Germans are!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>every Bavarian beer, starting with the \u201c<\/b><b><i>Six Sisters<\/i><\/b><b>\u201d of Oktoberfest , has reintroduced this style in its <\/b><b><i>core-range<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and some like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.benediktiner-weissbier.de\/it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Benedektiner<\/b><\/a><b>, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/de.erdinger.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Erdinger<\/b><\/a><b>, and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/franziskaner-weissbier.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Franziskaner<\/b><\/a><b> produce exclusively Weizen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and are absolutely worth trying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be a dummy!
