Wrong answer! (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the utmost respect for all of the contenders.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>May is the month of&#8230;beer!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beer has evolved over thousands of years and, over time, has given us a <\/span><b>large number of seasonal beers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: beers that are brewed <\/span><b>only during certain times of year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or for specific <\/span><b>occasions or holidays<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, during which the artistry of the master brewers has created a particular product for celebrating an event that\u2019s meaningful to a community. In Italy too, thanks to the brewing revolution that\u2019s taken place in recent years, we have become familiar with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seasonal beers (just think of the renown Christmas beers)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And May represents an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unicum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the worldwide brewing calendar, in which we <\/span><b>find a beer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s not dedicated to a specific season, nor to a specific holiday, but rather to <\/span><b>a specific month<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here you are, ladies and gentlemen: <\/span><b>Maibock, the beer of May<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>BLONDE, STRONG, AND BITTER<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as Heller Bock (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lighter, literally luminous, Bock) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or Helles Bock (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">light Bock<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>it\u2019s one of the many sub-styles of the more popular and well-known Bock<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is also known (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more correctly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) by the name Dunkel Bock (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dark Bock<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), precisely in order to set itself apart from the others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incidentally, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">super-geeks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> distinguish Heller\/Helles Bock from Maibock, with the latter representing the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> version: <\/span><b>more bitter and darker, light amber and not golden blonde<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a beer with an <\/span><b>#Intriguing character <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and if you haven\u2019t yet taken the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/test\/fai-il-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taste Test<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230; do it now!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>with a full body and high percentage of alcohol and a flavor that\u2019s perfectly balanced between sweet and bitter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As compared to the traditional version, it generally has <\/span><b>a lighter, golden\/amber color <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least in its current version, created in the second half of the 19th century, following the worldwide trend of light beers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>a higher presence of hops, and is dryer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>AN IBEX IN THE GLASS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>The Bock was first created in Einbeck, Saxony, and is an ancient beer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which had already been codified by local <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Braumeisters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 14th century with the name of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Einbecker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Einbeck (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cbeer\u201d was implied<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and was distributed and popularized from the Baltic Sea to Bavaria. It was here that, in 1614, <\/span><b>Elias Plicher, Master Saxon Brewer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was called upon by Duke Christian I of Zweibr\u00fccken-Birkenfeld-Bishweiler Wittelsbache <\/span><b>to (re)produce it at <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hofbraeuhaus.de\/it\/benvenuti.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staatliches Hofbr\u00e4uhaus<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">literally the Court\u2019s State Brewery<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or rather <\/span><b>the private ducal brewery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, today better known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hofbraeu-muenchen.de\/it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hofbr\u00e4u<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or simply <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hofbraeu-muenchen.de\/it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beer was named, in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boarisch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ainp\u00f6ckischer <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Einbeck<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The Bavarian pronunciation then began to distort the name, first in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oanpock<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, subsequently, perhaps due to alcohol slurring their speech (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I confess to having experienced this<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), in <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b><i>Ein Bock\u201d, <\/i><\/b><b>a Bock, which in German happens to mean ibex\/wild goat <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(marketing before marketing was a thing; what better name for a riskless male beer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?), produced in order to be ready for May, hence the name Maibock.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A MAIBOCK FOR MAIFEST<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes&#8230;<\/span><b>but why May specifically?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well before the (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly commercialized<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) Mother\u2019s Day and the (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">religious<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) Marian Feast Days, with an incredible thousand-year old <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fil rouge<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tying them all together, <\/span><b>May was the month of <\/b><b><i>Walpurgisnacht<\/i><\/b><b> (<\/b><b><i>Walpurgis Night<\/i><\/b><b>), one of the eight sabbaths of the Wheel of the Year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the four major ones to be precise, which mark the passing of time in the Germanic-Norse pagan religion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This period, exactly halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, <\/span><b>is the month of fertility, prosperity, light, blossoming, and the rebirth of nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the name, it\u2019s not so different from the Gaelic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beltane<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or our, more famous, Calendimaggio (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the evolution of the Latin Floralia, the celebrative games in honor of Flora, goddess of Spring, flowers, and all fruit trees. Imagine that!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is still celebrated, from Lombardy to Molise, in many local folklore festivals. It was <\/span><b>Gregory Magno, the evangelizing pope of Europe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who, in an epistle dated July 18th, 601, maintained that the church needed to <\/span><b>welcome the traditional pagan customs and holidays, transforming them into Christian liturgies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And it is thus that the Maifest (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Festivals of Mai, anciently known as Wunnimanoth, the month of pastures<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), organized in Germany by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brauchtumsgruppen <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Custodians of Tradition&#8230; no, they aren\u2019t characters from the world of Marvel and they don\u2019t have blasters or element guns<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), has survived to the present day, along with the need for a <\/span><b>seasonal celebratory beer, notably the Maibock!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-14396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3.jpg\" alt=\"maibock\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3-200x100.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3-500x250.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Inner_maibock3.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>NOT JUST THE XMAS TREE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unquestionable symbol of these festivals is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maibaum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May tree<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maipole <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May pole<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A tall trunk, measuring 20-40 meters tall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was raised in the town square, <\/span><b>decorated with green branches, wreaths, ribbons, and figures carved into the wood<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, representing the spring and an auspice of fertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019m certain that, without even realizing it, you\u2019ve already seen one<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in its modern and prosaic version, at the entrance to a brewery or pub, during beer festivals, in some commercials, and in films, perhaps with young men and women dancing around it holding long colored ribbons. If you happen to be in Munich, in the area of the Platzl, you could enjoy the unique experience of <\/span><b>drinking at the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hofbraeuhaus.de\/it\/benvenuti.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Hofbr\u00e4uhaus<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where it all began. If you happen to be here, from Monday to Thursday, with just \u20ac15 you can taste it while enjoying a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.einbecker.de\/brewerytours-info.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>guided tour<\/b><\/a><b> of the historic brewery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; reservations<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.einbecker.de\/brewerytours-applicationform.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are appreciated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Heller Bock produced by <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schwabenbraeu.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Schwaben Br\u00e4u<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We couldn\u2019t leave out the Stuttgart version, could we?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This brewery, founded in 1878 and now acquired by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familienbrauerei-dinkelacker.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dinkelacker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brewery, also in Stuttgart, has only once again started serving its own <\/span><b>golden-blonde version, with 6.9% ABV, since 2008<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
