When we say \u201c<\/span>beer<\/span><\/i>\u201d, our collective imagination fills with big-bellied and bearded men, mugs of beer slammed down onto the counters of dive bars in Caracas, cowboys wearing <\/span>Stetsons<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Hells Angels <\/span><\/i>with their <\/span>camperos <\/span><\/i>boots and patches, and all of the stereotypical machismo that you can find in Cliff Notes or in the sports bar down the street.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bud Spencer drank beer (<\/span>accompanied by his iconic beans<\/span><\/i>), Joe Cocker (<\/span>with his deep and gritty voice<\/span><\/i>) drank beer, three-time World Wrestling Champion Andr\u00e8 the Giant (<\/span>almost 7.5 feet tall and 290 kg [640 lbs]) drank beer.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In short, tough masculine stuff <\/b>(<\/span>without neglecting to mention, among its spokesmen, the eternal Arnold Schwarzenegger and, above all, Homer Simpson…<\/span><\/i>), in which women are relegated to a background made up of <\/span>pin-up<\/span><\/i> images.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing could be further from the truth.<\/b><\/p>\n

Beer is also feminine, and if we now have the good fortune of being able to open the refrigerator, or go to a pub, and enjoy a thirst-quenching pale ale, well… <\/span>we owe a big thank you <\/b>(<\/span>much bigger than you can imagine<\/span><\/i>) <\/span>to women<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This March 8th, to celebrate International Women\u2019s Day in our own unique way, we present to you the <\/span>eight women who revolutionized the world of beer<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. MARY LISLE<\/b><\/h2>\n

In 1734, In Philadelphia, USA, in a world that was as industrialized as it was chauvinist, <\/span>Mary Lisle, against all odds, <\/b>took over leadership of the Edinburgh Brewhouse, becoming the <\/span>first female master brewer of the modern age<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the past three centuries other heroines of the tankard have stepped forward into the brewing world, in which now more than <\/span>35% of the sector\u2019s operators are women<\/b>, refuting the senseless chauvinist prerogative once and for all.<\/span><\/p>\n

First place in Italy goes to <\/span>Rosa Gravina<\/b>, of <\/span>Orzo Bruno<\/span><\/a> in Pisa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Master brewer since 1995 (<\/span>the dawning of beer in Italy<\/span><\/i>), trained in the <\/span>Lambrate<\/span><\/a> neighborhood in Milan, she opened her own artisan brewery in 2003 and is one of the absolute <\/span>founders of the Italian craft beer movement.<\/b><\/p>\n

7. CLEOPATRA<\/b><\/h2>\n

Best remembered for her venomous snakes, immortalized by Shakespeare and Elizabeth Taylor, and the sixth queen of the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt, Cleopatra was also one of the <\/span>primary individuals responsible for introducing beer in Italy<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A skilled orchestrator of diplomacy and a <\/span>femme fatale<\/span><\/i>, the Queen of Queens, having bewitched first Caesar and then Antony, promoted the <\/span>exportation of <\/b>Zythum <\/i><\/b>and <\/b>Curmy <\/i><\/b>(<\/span>the primary Egyptian beers<\/span><\/i>) <\/span>to wine-drinking Rome<\/b> (her habit of bathing in beer in order to make her skin soft and smooth also complicit).<\/span><\/p>\n

6. TERI FAHRENDORF<\/b><\/h2>\n

Born in Wisconsin to a family of German origin, she was the master brewer of <\/span>River North<\/span><\/a>, Golden Gate, <\/span>Triple Rock<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>Steelhead<\/span><\/a> for about ten years.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2007 <\/span>she travelled across the United States<\/b>, Oregon-Maine A\/R, 20,368 km, armed with her characteristic <\/span>pink rubber boots<\/b>, to meet, at their respective breweries, the top <\/span>70 women operating in the brewing industry <\/b>in the United States. <\/span>The following year she founded the <\/span>Pink Boots Society<\/span><\/a>, the <\/span>first organization in the world<\/b> that supports, through training and mentoring, <\/span>women who are working <\/b>or want to work <\/span>in the beer industry<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2011 she also created <\/span>Barley\u2019s Angels<\/span><\/a>, an organization for non-professional <\/span>beer lovers<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>Thanks to the now universal consumption of and interest in beer (<\/span>more than 70% of women appreciate beer<\/span><\/i>), projects that follow her example have since been established all around the world, including <\/span>Le Donne della Birra <\/span><\/a>[The Women of Beer], in Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. ANNE-FRANCOISE PYPAERT<\/b><\/h2>\n

The <\/span>first woman <\/b>to hold the title of <\/span>Master Brewer in a Trappist brewery<\/b>, perhaps the most iconic of them all.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re talking about <\/span>Anne-Fran\u00e7oise Pypaert<\/b> and the <\/span>Brasserie d\u2019Orval<\/span><\/a> brewery at the Notre Dame d\u2019Orval Abbey in Belgium.<\/span><\/p>\n

The only woman to have ever worked in this monastery<\/b>, after 21 years of hard work, and a weighty legacy left by <\/span>Jean-Marie Rock <\/b>(<\/span>the brilliant and celebrated, yet caustic, master brewer who retired after thirty years of brewing<\/span><\/i>), she has now successfully held the reigns of the brewery since 2013. <\/span>The <\/span>Val d\u2019Or<\/span><\/i> is now a little more feminine.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. SISTER DORIS<\/b><\/h2>\n

Originally <\/span>Doris Engelhard<\/b>, born in 1949 in Bavaria (<\/span>it goes without saying<\/span><\/i>), a nun of the Poor Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family, she represents the feminine counterbalance of the Trappist or Abbey Beers that we\u2019re all familiar with.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Europe\u2019s centuries-old monastic tradition, <\/span>beer was by no means the exclusive domain of the brothers<\/b>. Numerous sisters (<\/span>just think of the <\/span><\/i>Reutberger<\/span><\/a> brewery, also in Bavaria and also run by the Franciscan Sisters<\/span><\/i>) brewed beer as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sister Doris is only the last in a long line. For the past 53 Springs, despite being 73 years old, every morning at 3:30am (<\/span>excused from the morning functions by the prioress<\/span><\/i>) <\/span>she leaves behind her role as nun and transforms into a master <\/b>braumeister<\/i><\/b>, significantly contributing to the sustenance of her 490 sisters at the Mallersdorf monastery.<\/span><\/p>\n

A niche production of just 800 hl\/year<\/b>, exclusively seasonal (<\/span>Maibock, Doppelbock, Zoigl, and Lager on a rotating basis) <\/span><\/i>and raw. <\/span>There\u2019s no online store and no shipping, <\/span>you can only find it in the pubs of the Straubing-Bogen district<\/b>, Lower Bavaria (<\/span>or at the convent\u2019s shop<\/span><\/i>). It\u2019s worth a visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sister Doris is also responsible for having introduced brewing to other religious female communities, which have returned to ancient productions, like her Benedictine peers\/rivals of <\/span>Maredret<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>with their beer by the same name<\/span><\/i>), in Anhee, Belgium.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. ALEWIFE<\/b><\/h2>\n

Big, broad, brawny, male, halfway between Hephaestus and Fulliautomatix (<\/span>the blacksmith of the Gallic village in Asterix<\/span><\/i>): this is the stereotype of the <\/span>Master Brewer<\/b>. <\/span>Wrong. This ancient profession (<\/span>probably the second oldest profession in history… or the first lawful one<\/span><\/i>), throughout antiquity, <\/span>was the work of real…women<\/b>!<\/span><\/p>\n

The trousseau of every good Sumerian-Assyrian-Babylonian (<\/span>as well as Incan or Viking<\/span><\/i>) bride always included the necessary accoutrements for producing beer. <\/span>The peak of this feminine monopoly was reached between the 14th and 18th centuries, when more than <\/span>80% of European beer production was firmly in the hands of women<\/b>, the so-called <\/span>\u201cAlewives\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

They\u2019re the ones who, passing it down from mother to daughter, preserved the ancient European herbalist tradition; the ones who <\/span>invented the insignias and flags <\/b>(<\/span>when the beer was ready to be sold, not having anything else, they would hang a broom outside of the house<\/span><\/i>), which became typical of taverns and breweries; the ones who <\/span>invented our beloved <\/b>pubs<\/i><\/b> and the figure of the publican.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our <\/span>Mistress Brewers<\/span><\/i> opened their homes to those who simply wanted to drink a tankard or purchase a bottle, <\/span>turning it into a <\/b>pub(lic homes)<\/i><\/b>, or a house that was open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. THE DISCOVERER<\/b><\/h2>\n

We don\u2019t have a name or a face, but we know with absolute certainty that it was a woman.<\/span><\/p>\n

The putative mother of our beloved beer<\/b>, a skirt-wearing Christopher Columbus sailing on amber waves, the human being who changed the course of beverage history, <\/span>was a woman<\/b>. <\/span>10,000 BC, Mesopotamia (<\/span>a nomadic society of hunters = men, gatherers = woman<\/span><\/i>), the Eve of all brewers forgets her urn of freshly gathered wild grains (<\/span>wheat, barley, or spelt<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Rain and the heat of the sun, alternating in those moors, do the rest of the magic: <\/span>beer was born<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. HILDEGARDA VON BINGEN<\/b><\/h2>\n

One of the great minds of the late Middle Ages, <\/span>as eclectic as it was <\/b>(<\/span>undeservedly<\/span><\/i>) <\/span>unknown<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Physicist, philosopher, doctor, poet, dramaturg, politician, painter, linguist, pharmacist, naturalist, theologian, naturopath, scientist, psychologist, herbalist, musician, cosmologist, and writer.<\/span><\/p>\n

And in her free time a nun, abbess, exorcist, and saint.<\/span><\/p>\n

She should be mentioned in history books<\/b>, on equal footing as her masculine counterparts, <\/span>like Leonardo and Dante<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Born in 1098 in a small town in Rhineland, Germany, she became a Benedictine nun in 1112, <\/span>wrote 13 books on various topics, painted illuminated manuscripts, composed Gregorian chants, and created the <\/b>Lingua Ignota <\/i><\/b>[Unknown Language]<\/b>, an artificial language with its own 23-letter alphabet, long before Zamenhof\u2019s Esperanto or Tolkien\u2019s languages of Middle Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

She openly challenged<\/b>, with harsh words (<\/span>and without being beheaded<\/span><\/i>), <\/span>Emperor Frederick Barbarossa<\/b>, for having opposed two antipopes to Pope Alexander III and was the <\/span>first woman in history to describe<\/b>, without regard for the clergy or for Rome, <\/span>the female orgasm<\/b>! In a word: revolutionary!<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, when we talk about <\/span>beer, we mean water, malt, yeast, and hops<\/b>, but prior to the studies of Ildegarda, hops wasn\u2019t an ingredient. They used to dump everything (<\/span>truly everything! From raspberries to myrtle and the famous Gruit<\/span><\/i>)<\/span> into the <\/span>cervogia<\/span><\/i>, except for this flowering plant.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her \u201c<\/span>Book of Creatures<\/span><\/i>\u201d she is the first to talk about hops which \u201c<\/span>thanks to its bitterness, halts the putrefaction of certain beverages to which it is added, allowing them to be preserved for much longer<\/span><\/i>\u201d. <\/span>Beer (<\/span>complicit also Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation<\/span><\/i>) would never be the same.<\/span><\/p>\n

And if today we can enjoy a thirst-quenching, bitter, and aromatic beer, well, we undeniably have her to thank.<\/span><\/p>\n
