MARY LISLE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1734, In Philadelphia, USA, in a world that was as industrialized as it was chauvinist, <\/span><b>Mary Lisle, against all odds, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took over leadership of the Edinburgh Brewhouse, becoming the <\/span><b>first female master brewer of the modern age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past three centuries other heroines of the tankard have stepped forward into the brewing world, in which now more than <\/span><b>35% of the sector\u2019s operators are women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, refuting the senseless chauvinist prerogative once and for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First place in Italy goes to <\/span><b>Rosa Gravina<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of <\/span><a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orzo Bruno<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Pisa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master brewer since 1995 (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the dawning of beer in Italy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), trained in the <\/span><a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lambrate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> neighborhood in Milan, she opened her own artisan brewery in 2003 and is one of the absolute <\/span><b>founders of the Italian craft beer movement.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>7. TERI FAHRENDORF<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in Wisconsin to a family of German origin, she was the master brewer of <\/span><a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River North<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Golden Gate, <\/span><a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triple Rock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steelhead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for about ten years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2007 <\/span><b>she travelled across the United States<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Oregon-Maine A\/R, 20,368 km, armed with her characteristic <\/span><b>pink rubber boots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to meet, at their respective breweries, the top <\/span><b>70 women operating in the brewing industry <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the United States. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following year she founded the <\/span><a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pink Boots Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>first organization in the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that supports, through training and mentoring, <\/span><b>women who are working <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or want to work <\/span><b>in the beer industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011 she also created <\/span><a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barley\u2019s Angels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an organization for non-professional <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beer lovers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to the now universal consumption of and interest in beer (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 70% of women appreciate beer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), projects that follow her example have since been established all around the world, including <\/span><a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le Donne della Birra <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[The Women of Beer], in Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5. ANNE-FRANCOISE PYPAERT<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>first woman <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to hold the title of <\/span><b>Master Brewer in a Trappist brewery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, perhaps the most iconic of them all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re talking about <\/span><b>Anne-Fran\u00e7oise Pypaert<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brasserie d\u2019Orval<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brewery at the Notre Dame d\u2019Orval Abbey in Belgium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The only woman to have ever worked in this monastery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after 21 years of hard work, and a weighty legacy left by <\/span><b>Jean-Marie Rock <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the brilliant and celebrated, yet caustic, master brewer who retired after thirty years of brewing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), she has now successfully held the reigns of the brewery since 2013. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Val d\u2019Or<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is now a little more feminine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. SISTER DORIS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally <\/span><b>Doris Engelhard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, born in 1949 in Bavaria (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it goes without saying<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a nun of the Poor Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family, she represents the feminine counterbalance of the Trappist or Abbey Beers that we\u2019re all familiar with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Europe\u2019s centuries-old monastic tradition, <\/span><b>beer was by no means the exclusive domain of the brothers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Numerous sisters (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just think of the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reutberger<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brewery, also in Bavaria and also run by the Franciscan Sisters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) brewed beer as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sister Doris is only the last in a long line. For the past 53 Springs, despite being 73 years old, every morning at 3:30am (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excused from the morning functions by the prioress<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><b>she leaves behind her role as nun and transforms into a master <\/b><b><i>braumeister<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, significantly contributing to the sustenance of her 490 sisters at the Mallersdorf monastery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A niche production of just 800 hl\/year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, exclusively seasonal (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maibock, Doppelbock, Zoigl, and Lager on a rotating basis) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and raw. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no online store and no shipping, <\/span><b>you can only find it in the pubs of the Straubing-Bogen district<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Lower Bavaria (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or at the convent\u2019s shop<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). It\u2019s worth a visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sister Doris is also responsible for having introduced brewing to other religious female communities, which have returned to ancient productions, like her Benedictine peers\/rivals of <\/span><a href=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maredret<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with their beer by the same name<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), in Anhee, Belgium.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. ALEWIFE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big, broad, brawny, male, halfway between Hephaestus and Fulliautomatix (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the blacksmith of the Gallic village in Asterix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): this is the stereotype of the <\/span><b>Master Brewer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrong. This ancient profession (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probably the second oldest profession in history&#8230; or the first lawful one<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), throughout antiquity, <\/span><b>was the work of real&#8230;women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trousseau of every good Sumerian-Assyrian-Babylonian (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as Incan or Viking<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) bride always included the necessary accoutrements for producing beer. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The peak of this feminine monopoly was reached between the 14th and 18th centuries, when more than <\/span><b>80% of European beer production was firmly in the hands of women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the so-called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlewives\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re the ones who, passing it down from mother to daughter, preserved the ancient European herbalist tradition; the ones who <\/span><b>invented the insignias and flags <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when the beer was ready to be sold, not having anything else, they would hang a broom outside of the house<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which became typical of taverns and breweries; the ones who <\/span><b>invented our beloved <\/b><b><i>pubs<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the figure of the publican.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mistress Brewers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opened their homes to those who simply wanted to drink a tankard or purchase a bottle, <\/span><b>turning it into a <\/b><b><i>pub(lic homes)<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or a house that was open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. HILDEGARDA VON BINGEN<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the great minds of the late Middle Ages, <\/span><b>as eclectic as it was <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undeservedly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><b>unknown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physicist, philosopher, doctor, poet, dramaturg, politician, painter, linguist, pharmacist, naturalist, theologian, naturopath, scientist, psychologist, herbalist, musician, cosmologist, and writer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in her free time a nun, abbess, exorcist, and saint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>She should be mentioned in history books<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on equal footing as her masculine counterparts, <\/span><b>like Leonardo and Dante<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in 1098 in a small town in Rhineland, Germany, she became a Benedictine nun in 1112, <\/span><b>wrote 13 books on various topics, painted illuminated manuscripts, composed Gregorian chants, and created the <\/b><b><i>Lingua Ignota <\/i><\/b><b>[Unknown Language]<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an artificial language with its own 23-letter alphabet, long before Zamenhof\u2019s Esperanto or Tolkien\u2019s languages of Middle Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>She openly challenged<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with harsh words (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and without being beheaded<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>Emperor Frederick Barbarossa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for having opposed two antipopes to Pope Alexander III and was the <\/span><b>first woman in history to describe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, without regard for the clergy or for Rome, <\/span><b>the female orgasm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! In a word: revolutionary!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, when we talk about <\/span><b>beer, we mean water, malt, yeast, and hops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but prior to the studies of Ildegarda, hops wasn\u2019t an ingredient. They used to dump everything (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">truly everything!
