For those who love the mountains in winter,<\/span> January <\/b>is the month that offers the <\/span>best price\/quality ratio<\/b> and the opportunity to <\/span>ski in peace, without long lines at the slopes<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But during this vacation dedicated to sport and nature, between skiing, <\/span>chalets<\/span><\/i>, and breathtaking alpine landscapes…why not enjoy a nice beer?<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are the <\/span>10 best European destinations <\/b>where you can enhance your <\/span>ski vacation with a (good) brewery<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. GSTAAD, CANTON BERN (SWITZERLAND)<\/b><\/h2>\n

A well-known <\/span>destination for <\/b>luxury <\/i><\/b>tourism<\/b>, at the border between French and German Switzerland, it offers <\/span>250 km of ski runs <\/b>and <\/span>62 slopes<\/b>. In the town of <\/span>Saanen<\/span><\/i>, just 4 km from the snow, you\u2019ll find a small (<\/span>truly small<\/span><\/i>) family-run microbrewery, <\/span>Saane Gutsch<\/b><\/a>. Despite the Heidi-esque landscape, its inspiration is entirely <\/span>Made in the UK<\/span><\/i>:<\/span> Golden Ale<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Amber Ale<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Chocolate Stout,<\/span><\/i> and an interesting<\/span> Mango Ale<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

9. MAYRHOFEN, ZILLERTAL (AUSTRIA)<\/b><\/h2>\n

Capital of the <\/span>Zillertal <\/span><\/i>ski district, with its <\/span>245 km of ski runs <\/b>and <\/span>77 slopes<\/b>, this is a <\/span>must<\/span><\/i> for snow lovers. And remember: here it\u2019s possible to <\/span>ski year-round<\/b>, thanks to the <\/span>Hintertux <\/span><\/i>glacier at 3,250 m asl.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Harakiri<\/b>, not for the faint of heart (o<\/span>nly the brave<\/span><\/i>), is the slope that made <\/span>Mayrhofen<\/span><\/i> world famous, with its incredible <\/span>78% gradient <\/b>(VM14). At less than 8 km from the snowy runs, in the town of <\/span>Zel am Zillertal<\/span><\/i>, you\u2019ll find a true piece of brewing history: <\/span>Zillertal Bier<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Founded in <\/span>1506<\/b>, it\u2019s the oldest brewery in the region<\/span>,<\/b> and in <\/span>1678<\/b> became the <\/span>first <\/b>Privatbrauerei<\/i><\/b> in all of Tyrol<\/b>. <\/span>The Jobst family <\/b>has managed the company for the past <\/span>16 generations<\/b> and today serves <\/span>17 different beers<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

These beers, focused primarily on low-fermentation, range from the <\/span>Zwickl<\/span><\/i> to the <\/span>Weizenbock<\/span><\/i>. Two stand out: <\/span>Granat<\/b><\/a>, <\/span>Barley Wine<\/span><\/i> (the only example of high fermentation), and <\/span>Guader Steinbock Reserve<\/b><\/a>, a <\/span>Bock<\/span><\/i> aged in a <\/span>Sherry Cask<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. SELVA DI VALGARDENA, SOUTH TYROL (ITALY)<\/b><\/h2>\n

A well-known tourist destination of the southern Tyrol valley by the same name, Selva\u2019s <\/span>Skiarena<\/span><\/i> boasts <\/span>79 slopes <\/b>and <\/span>175 km of ski runs<\/b>, including the <\/span>Saslong<\/i><\/b>, world famous for the Downhill and Super-G competitions<\/b> which take place every year during the world championships.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is, furthermore, part of two big ski districts, <\/span>Sellaronda <\/b>(<\/span>483 km that connect the valleys of Fassa, Livinallongo, Badia, and Gardena<\/span><\/i>) and <\/span>Dolomiti Superski <\/b>(<\/span>500 km \u201cskis on your feet\u201d between South Tyrol, Trentino, and Bellunese<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Santa Cristina hamlet, you\u2019ll find <\/span>Eguia<\/b><\/a>, a brewery with an attached <\/span>brew-pub<\/span><\/i> and Tyrolean food, where you can taste, also on tap, the 9 beers that they produce, perhaps paired with a nice piping hot <\/span>Weisswurst<\/span><\/i>!<\/span><\/p>\n

A beer for everyone, spanning every brewing style.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of note is also a line of <\/span>barriques aged in oak barrels<\/b>, exclusively in champagne-style bottles, to share with friends (<\/span>compartir es vivir<\/span><\/i>) after a day on the slopes.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. BAQUEIRA, VAL D\u2019AR\u00c0N (SPAIN)<\/b><\/h2>\n

When we think of skiing, it\u2019s unlikely that Spain comes to mind, more associated with Sangria, <\/span>playa<\/span><\/i>, and nightclubs, but the Pyrenees, at 3,312 m asl, <\/span>are a perfect destination for winter sports<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Baqueira district is the mate proof: <\/span>160 km of ski runs and 36 slopes <\/b>make it the <\/span>most important ski town on the Iberian Peninsula<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Without leaving the district, you can find the <\/span>Refu<\/b><\/a> brewery in Boss\u00f2st, open since 2010, complete with its own <\/span>tap-room<\/span><\/i>, where you can taste its 7 beers, <\/span>heavily inspired by the <\/b>British <\/i><\/b>brewi<\/b>ng <\/i><\/b>style<\/b>, like the <\/i><\/b>Palisandro<\/b> (<\/span>Brown Ale<\/span><\/i>), the <\/span>Wee<\/b> (<\/span>Wee Heavy<\/span><\/i>), and the <\/span>Huxley<\/b> (<\/span>Best Bitter<\/span><\/i>), in memory of <\/span>Steve Huxley<\/b> (RIP), master brewer of Liverpool who moved to Barcelona, where he became the \u201c<\/span>Herbert Marcuse<\/span><\/i>\u201d of the Spanish <\/span>craft beer <\/span><\/i>movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just 15 km further north, in Vielha, you\u2019ll find their pub with restaurant, complete with an English-style <\/span>hand-pump!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

6. BERCHTESGADEN, UPPER BAVARIA (GERMANY)<\/b><\/h2>\n

The last town along the <\/span>Deutsche Alpenstrasse<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> the Alpine Road of the Bavarian Alps, with its <\/span>180 km of ski runs <\/b>and <\/span>71 slopes<\/b>, <\/span>Berchtesgaden <\/span><\/i>is one of the <\/span>most important ski towns in Germany<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s on these beautiful slopes that the <\/span>Fabulous Five <\/span><\/i>of the Italian national team, <\/span>World Cup 1974<\/b>, placed with <\/span>5 athletes in the first 5 spots <\/b>(in order of appearance:<\/span> Gros, Th\u00f6ni, Stricker, Schmalsl, and Pietrogiovanna) <\/span><\/i>in the Giant Slalom, giving birth to the legendary \u201c<\/span>Blue Avalanche\u201d<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here you\u2019ll find the <\/span>Hofbrauhaus-Berchtesgaden<\/b><\/a> (Berchtesgaden\u2019s beer hall)<\/span><\/i>, one of the most historic breweries in all of Germany, <\/span>built in 1645 by Maximillian I<\/b>, <\/i><\/b>Duke of Bavaria.<\/span><\/p>\n

9 beers produced, all, it goes without saying, in the Bavarian style.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Eisbock<\/i><\/b> is the hall\u2019s <\/span>must-taste<\/span><\/i> beer, obtained through <\/span>cold distillation and with 11.9% ABV<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. KRANJSKA GORA, UPPER CARNIOLA (SLOVENIA)<\/b><\/h2>\n

Despite not being a huge ski district, with its <\/span>20 slopes <\/b>and only <\/span>20 km of ski runs<\/b>, in recent years <\/span>Kranjska Gora\u2019s s<\/span><\/i>tar has begun to shine ever more brightly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Located in the <\/span>Triglav National Park<\/b> (<\/span>Triglavski<\/span><\/i>), in the Sava Valley, today it has become a regular stop for the Giant and Special slaloms of the International Ski Federation\u2019s circuit thanks to the <\/span>Podkoren <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>a legend!<\/span><\/i>), considered to be <\/span>one of the most spectacular and technical slalom runs <\/b>in the world, famous for its <\/span>inclines of up to 59%<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a strenuous day, in the center of the town you\u2019ll find <\/span>Kranjsko Pivo<\/b><\/a> waiting for you, a brewery with a connected <\/span>brew-pub<\/span><\/i>, ready to assuage your hunger.<\/span><\/p>\n

Open since 2016<\/b>, it serves <\/span>German and Bavarian style beers <\/b>which are ready to be paired with the classic <\/span>Kranjska Klobasa<\/b>, Slovenia\u2019s traditional Carniolan sausage.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. DAVOS, CANTON OF THE GRISONS (SWITZERLAND)<\/b><\/h2>\n

An Alpine town, <\/span>known for its winter sports since the late 19th century <\/b>and loved by authors of the caliber of <\/span>Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, <\/b>and <\/span>Thomas Mann <\/b>(<\/span>who set his masterpiece \u201cMagic Mountain\u201d here<\/span><\/i>), today <\/span>Davos <\/span><\/i>is one of the most famous and popular ski destinations in Switzerland, with <\/span>59 slopes <\/b>and <\/span>320 km of ski runs<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. KITZB\u00dcHEL, TYROL (AUSTRIA)<\/b><\/h2>\n

The much-loved \u201c<\/span>Kitz<\/span><\/i>\u201d, a regular and mandatory stop for the <\/span>FIS World Cup of Alpine Skiing<\/b><\/a>, with its two iconic slopes, <\/span>Streif <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>for downhill<\/span><\/i>) and <\/span>Ganslern <\/span><\/i>(<\/span>for the Special slalom<\/span><\/i>), earns third place on this list with its <\/span>170 km of ski runs <\/b>and <\/span>55 slopes<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just 10 km away, in the town of <\/span>Sankt Johann in Tirol<\/span><\/i>, there\u2019s <\/span>Huber Br\u00e4u<\/b><\/a>, the historic brewery of the Huber family, <\/span>founded in 1727<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

16 different beers<\/b>, including (<\/span>God, please forgive me<\/span><\/i>) two run of the mill <\/span>Radlers<\/span><\/i>, all strictly <\/span>low fermentation and German-style<\/b>, or better yet Bavarian-style, as we must rightly expect from a historic brewery.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the paradise of <\/span>Helles, Bock, Weizen, <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Pils<\/span><\/i>, but we also find the less common <\/span>Zwickl <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>M\u00fcnich Dunkel<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A traditional <\/span>St\u00fcbe <\/span><\/i>is located on the ground floor to warm your body and palate.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. LIVIGNO, UPPER VALTELLINA (ITALY)<\/b><\/h2>\n

Our silver medal goes to the <\/span>northernmost town in Lombardy<\/b>!<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re talking about Livigno, Upper Valtellina.<\/span><\/p>\n

An altitude of 1816 m, 115 km of ski runs, and 44 ski lifts <\/b>that let you ski at <\/span>up to 2,800 m asl<\/b>, make this one of the most popular mountain towns in Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n

The altitude of the town inspired the name of the local artisan brewery, the <\/span>1816<\/b><\/a>, established in 2001 during what\u2019s known in Italy as the \u201c<\/span>Second Generation<\/span><\/i>\u201d of the <\/span>craft beer <\/span><\/i>movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Six different beers are produced here<\/b>, ranging from great classics, like the <\/span>Pils <\/span><\/i>or the <\/span>Bitter<\/span><\/i>, all the way to more <\/span>hyped<\/span><\/i> beers like the <\/span>DDH Session IPA<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

One that stands out? The <\/span>Canapa<\/b><\/a>, West Coast IPA made with Valtellina hemp<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Less than 1 km from the brewery, there\u2019s <\/span>Campo Base<\/b><\/a>, 1816\u2019s brew-restaurant, a <\/span>Valtellinese-Nepalese <\/b>fusion<\/i><\/b> restaurant<\/b>, where you can enjoy a steaming dish of <\/span>pizzoccheri<\/span><\/i> or a yak curry (<\/span>it\u2019s amazing!<\/span><\/i>)! <\/span>Namaste<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A historic tourist location, it has <\/span>82 lifts and 245 km of ski runs<\/b>, including the infamous <\/span>Sarenne<\/span><\/i>, a black diamond run that (<\/span>if you\u2019re up for it<\/span><\/i>) will take you from 3,350 m asl to 1,510 m asl in just 16 km.
