These beers were made with the heavyweight champion of cucurbits: the pumpkin. But don\u2019t (only) assume that this is a marketing gimmick to turn our pints orange!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pumpkin ales are the legacy of an ancient tradition <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a country that\u2019s \u201conly\u201d 400 years old<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>created in emergency and for subsistence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pumpkin ales are one of the rare and few atavistic examples of an entirely <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in the U.S.A. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brewing style.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first written record can be traced back to 1771, when the American Philosophical Society, founded by Boston resident Benjamin \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The First American<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Franklin, published an actual recipe, yet it was discovered even earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-12121\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2.jpg\" alt=\"birre e zucche\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20800%20400%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27800%27%20height%3D%27400%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2-200x100.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2-500x250.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vinhood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/inner_birre_alla_zucca_2.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>VADE RETRO AQUA!<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all of the Middle Ages it was customary, in England and more or less throughout <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mittel-nord <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe, to use <\/span><b>waterways as a place to dump every kind of waste imaginable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it dangerous, unhealthy, and even deadly to drink it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this legacy ingrained in their behavior, the earliest Americans remained true to the very direct, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trenchant<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and British equation: <\/span><b>drink water = die, drink beer = live<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They didn\u2019t dare swallow even a drop of water, even though the waterways in the New World were clearly pristine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, the \u201cBlonde\u201d Rush.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1587, the first haggard British settlers, on the route established by Venetian explorers John and Sebastian Cabot, began, in very a rudimentary fashion, to brew beer, and in <\/span><b>1621<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, just a year after having landed on Plymouth Rock, the highly persecuted puritan Pilgrim Fathers, of the famous and ethereal Mayflower, built, as <\/span><b>the first structure of the newly created colony&#8230;a brewery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u201cMAN DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE\u201d, BUT ALSO ON COLD BEER!<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point the problem of the early Americans was that of raw ingredients. The mercantile shipments from the mother land, across the Atlantic, were sporadic, and the settlers\u2019 attempts at cultivating barley unfruitful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All seemed lost! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before asking the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titanic Orchestra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to play its final piece as the ship was sinking, the \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sachem<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hief of a Native American tribe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of the Massasoit came to their rescue (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the same one from Thanksgiving, just to be clear<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>teaching the new arrivals how to farm and use &#8211; for beer as well &#8211; the exotic fruits of the New World<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this new and virgin brewing triumph, such was their thirst for beer that the colonists began to ferment anything they could find on American land&#8230;truly anything!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the more \u201cnormal\u201d <\/span><b>corn, oats, and rye<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all the way to <\/span><b>acorns, carrots, persimmons, Jerusalem artichokes, and conifer buds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pumpkins <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell squarely into this mad race, <\/span><b>thanks to their nearly 10% sugar content <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(highly fermentable material)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the abundance with which they grew in the area (the most plentiful crop), leading to the birth of pumpkin ale.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>PUMPKIN AND THE PROLETARIAT<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truth be told, this style wasn\u2019t particularly successful. It was considered a <\/span><b>strange and plebeian product, to be brewed only in times of absolute famine or need<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noblesse Oblige<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who could afford the luxury of expensive grains imported from Europe, almost never drank it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>19th century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with its improvements in agriculture and stable supply of high quality barley, marked the <\/span><b>end of pumpkin ale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, destined to be entirely forgotten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as Antoine de Saint-Exup\u00e9ry wrote, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For every end there is a new beginning,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and our \u201ccucurb-eer\u201d was dusted off during the American <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Craft Beer Revolution <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fabulous \u201880s.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>THE PUMPKIN RENAISSANCE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><b>(re)discovery has a name and last name: Bill Owens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalobillsbrewery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buffalo Bill&#8217;s Brewery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Hayward, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1985, after having found out about a <\/span><b>recipe written by <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non other than &#8211; <\/span><b><i>America\u2019s Original Pumpkin Ale<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalobillsbrewery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buffalo Bill&#8217;s Brewery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an absolute icon, still regularly in production, which has now been joined (from the same brewery) by <\/span><b><i>Black Pumpkin Oatmeal Stout<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made with dark Scottish oatmeal beer;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; the three examples of ale by Seattle\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elysianbrewing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elysian Brewery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the classic <\/span><b><i>Night Owl<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Owens\u2019 pure conservative style; <\/span><b><i>The Great Pumpkin<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which, with its 8.4% abv, is the first Imperial Pumpkin Ale in history; and finally <\/span><b><i>Punkuccino <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(made with coffee stout), a dark, coffee beer in the English style which has been officially adopted by the US;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b><i>Punkin\u2019 Ale <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogfish.com\/#fishgate-dialog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogfish Head<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Milton, Delaware;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;
