The De Landtsheer are an old Belgian brewing family.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their dynasty began in 1798<\/b>, when the patriarch, Balthazar (<\/span>Nomen Omen<\/span><\/i>), the son of a rich ship builder, decided to change course, founding the <\/span>De Halve Maan <\/span><\/i>(the Half Moon) brewery – a brand that still exists to this day – in the village of Baasrode, Flanders, with a population of 6,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Over the decades the business flourished, first under his son Edward, who assumed the role of Master Brewer, and subsequently under his granddaughter Rosalia, with the help of her husband, who <\/span>changed the name to Bacchus<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>In 1839, Emmanuel, the founder\u2019s grandson, moved to Buggenhout to marry Maria-Anna Sarens.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BRUGGENHOUT, THE SONG OF THE SWAN<\/b><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/span>But <\/span>no matter how much you try to run from your destiny, it\u2019ll always catch up with you<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>It so happened that the family of Emmanuel\u2019s young bride owned a brewery (the <\/span>Meuleken<\/span><\/i>), which had been active until 1709.<\/span><\/p>\n

The newly wed couldn\u2019t help but to get it running again, <\/span>thus founding, in the same year, the <\/b>Brouwerij De Zon<\/i><\/b>, <\/span><\/i>the Brewery of the Sun (the reason why to this day the company\u2019s color, found on the tops and labels of the bottles, is orange).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The business prospered for almost a century, until neutral and nonconfrontational Belgium fell victim to Germany\u2019s wrath during the two World Wars.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The country, which became a war zone, <\/span>was invaded by the Germans twice in less than thirty years<\/b>: in 1914 with the <\/span>Schlieffen <\/span><\/i>Plan, and in 1940 with the <\/span>Fall Gelb <\/span><\/i>Plan, and, against its will, the De Landtsheer family was forced to shut down and cease production.<\/span><\/p>\n

1991: THE ADVENTURE STARTS AGAIN!<\/b><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Emmanuel (grandson of the previous Emmanuel) was the last member of the dynasty to produce, and his son, Adolf, the first one forced to change occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n

He began importing and distributing <\/span>Pilsner Urquell<\/span><\/i><\/a> in Belgium and bottling for the <\/span>Westmalle<\/span><\/i><\/a> and <\/span>Lamot <\/span><\/i>breweries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Adolf spent his whole life weighed down by defeat while nurturing the undying <\/span>dream of resurrecting, like a Phoenix from the ashes, the family business<\/b>, but without success.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>He died in 1991, leaving the company in the hands of his son, Emmanuel \u201cManu\u201d De Landtsheer.<\/span><\/p>\n

In that dramatic moment, and to honor the memory of his father, Manu decided to take up the baton and realize his father\u2019s dream: <\/span>the De Landtsheer family would once again make beer!<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cMISFORTUNE\u201d OPENS ITS DOORS<\/b><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Manu tried to buy back the De Halve Maan, the family\u2019s old brewery, but unfortunately this proved to be impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Six years later, with his sister Martine and his mother Monique, he opened <\/span>Malheur<\/span><\/a> or \u201cMisfortune\u201d (a name which he chose ironically, to <\/span>symbolically exorcize the troubles of the past<\/b>), a small family brewery, putting his first wort, Malheur 6 (to this day still in production) on the market.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Luc Verhaegen<\/b>, \u201cborrowed\u201d from the famous <\/span>De Koninck<\/span><\/i><\/a> brewery in Antwerp, was hired as its <\/span>master brewer<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>But more than <\/span>Malheur<\/span><\/i>, it was destiny that knocked once again at the De Landtsheer\u2019s door, this time <\/span>in the guise of Michael Jackson<\/b>!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>No, not \u201c<\/span>that<\/span><\/i>\u201d Michael Jackson, famous for <\/span>Thriller<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Moonwalker<\/span><\/i>, but the \u201c<\/span>other<\/span><\/i>\u201d <\/span>Michael Jackson, <\/span>The Beer Hunter<\/span><\/i><\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n

Born in 1942 in a small town just outside of Leeds in England, Jackson was a journalist, a writer, and a TV presenter.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was the <\/span>first \u201cbeer-taster\u201d in history<\/b>, a man who, thanks to his books (especially <\/span>The World Guide to Beer<\/span><\/i><\/a>, which belongs on your reading list), helped to save quality beer and styles from certain extinction (though you didn\u2019t know it, he\u2019s the reason that you\u2019re reading this right now and have gotten this far).<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

IT\u2019S ALL MICHAEL JACKSON\u2019S FAULT<\/b><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/span>A huge connoisseur of Belgian beer <\/b>and its <\/span>blonde<\/span><\/i> ales, in 1999, accompanied by several friends, he showed up in Buggenhout to visit the brewery.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>At the end of the guided tour and after tasting the beers in production at the time, he stopped to talk with Manu, saying to him: \u201c<\/span>What are you dreams? Future plans?\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malheur\u2019s owner, somewhere between frank and timid, answered almost hesitantly: <\/span>\u201c<\/b>I\u2019d like to make a beer the way our neighbors in Ardenne make their champagne.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>And why don\u2019t you?\u201d urged Michael.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Almost as though shaking himself out of a daydream, Manu bluntly and sincerely responded with: <\/span>\u201cBecause I don\u2019t have potential clients to whom I could sell such a product.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

At this point <\/span>good old Destiny <\/span><\/i>decided to possess one of Michael\u2019s friends, an American, a beer fanatic, and a member of the U.S. Belgian Beer Club, who, right there in the heart of Flanders, channeled the true spirit of the American Dream. <\/span>\u201cDon\u2019t worry about it and just do it! I\u2019ll buy the entire first wort!\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

To Manu it seemed too good to be true, and he threw himself head first into the project.<\/span><\/p>\n

THE CHALLENGE TO \u201cFLANDERS\u2019 CHAMPAGNE\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n

For three years Manu and Luc travelled back and forth along the 236 kilometers that separated them from <\/span>Notre-Dame de Reims<\/span><\/i>, visiting <\/span>Vigneron <\/span><\/i>to <\/span>study production methods, acquire machinery, and find the right yeast <\/b>(<\/span>Saccharomyces Bayanus<\/span><\/i>) from the <\/span>Institut Oenologique de Champagne<\/span><\/i>, in Epernay.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>In 2002 <\/span>Malheur Bi\u00e8re Brut <\/span><\/i>finally debuted,<\/span> the <\/span>first beer in the world produced with the <\/b>m\u00e8thode champenoise<\/i><\/b>, <\/span><\/i>as the French would say,<\/span> with liqu\u00e8ur de tirage<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>prise de mousse<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>remuage<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>d\u00e8gorgement<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>liqu\u00e8ur d’expedition. <\/span><\/i>It was immediately a success!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Comit\u00e8 Champagne, <\/span><\/i>bothered by the <\/span>international press which christened the new beer with the name <\/b>Bi\u00e8re-Champagne<\/i><\/b> or <\/b>Bi\u00e8re-Champenoise<\/i><\/b> (terms which are still commonly used), filed a lawsuit against poor Manu.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After five long years of legal battles, the lawsuit finally ended having essentially achieved nothing, given that Malheur never used those terms, and permitting him the use of the eptithets <\/span>m\u00e8thode originale<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Bi\u00e8re-Brut<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the course of these past nineteen years, Malheur has produced <\/span>five different Classic Method beers<\/b>, all absolutely worth tasting, and has inspired numerous copy-cats in Italy as well (from <\/span>Birra del Borgo\u2019s Equilibrista<\/span><\/a>, to <\/span>Baladin\u2019s Metodo Classico<\/span><\/a>): Bi\u00e8re-Brut, Brut-Reserve, Dark-Brut, Cuv\u00e9e Royale, and a Bi\u00e8re-Brut Limited Edition.<\/span><\/p>\n

And if it\u2019s true that <\/span>ce n’est pas du champagne si ce n’est pas du champagne<\/span><\/i>, then it\u2019s just as true that <\/span>ce n’est pas du bi\u00e8re-brut si ce n’est pas du Malheur<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
